hihat help...

I've been playing for about 6 months. I have a set of wuhan s-series cymbals. They work well enough for me, but I'd like to upgrade the hihats. My favorite hat sound is stewart copeland on reggatta de blanc. What kind of hats will give me a sound like that? The only info I've found is that in 1984 on stage he was using Formula 602 13-inch medium hi-hats (sans Sound Edge). I'm more concerned with emulating the recorded sound than anything else.

Thanks for any help...

I don't really care about brand names or whatnot, but this is what I could find about the zildjians:

"Zildjian Scimitars are probably the crappiest cymbals I've ever played and definitely a black mark on an otherwise sterling corporate reputation (the ZBTs aren't much better...). "

The hats on reggatta sound very bright and clear to me - so how does that translate to marketing drivel? Everything I read makes every set of hats sound amazing. I guess I need help with just the basics of that hat sound. Are they heavy or thin? Are they loud, or do they just cut well in the mix?

Thanks for helping out a semi-newb...

ok, talking to myself here but just an fyi - after a lot of google searching, it seems the 2002 13" heavy hats will get me close. They are being closed out at around $170 at music123.com.

Copeland used Scimitars? My god. I don't know if it's true or not, but my drummer used to have Scimitar hats and I can't think of anything else that sounds that bad. I really detested those hats. Steer clear.

I was just kidding!!!!! I was hoping he knew I was joking. That was my first pair of hats and they are terrrrrible. Now I own Sabian AAX Stage, those are nice for what that's worth. But sorry, I have no idea what he used. I bet if you try a bunch out you'll find something that gets your goat.

Just curious, what's with the fetish with his sound? Are you just trying to duplicate it? Why? Recordings can make things sound way different than what's reality, ya know flo...especially from 1984.

lol! I wasn't sure, but had a feeling you were fibbing. Yeah I've got the AAX Fast Hats now and I dig em. I'd like to get some 13" K's possibly. Maybe some skill too. hehheh

Please read posts and comprehend them before you ask stupid questions. Regetta de blanc simply has the best hihat shound I've ever heard. I'd like to get some hats that will get me close to that sound. I'm very aware of recording techinques - I only started playing drums so I could record them in my home studio.

Zildjian Scimitars Hihats indeed do suck!

I had a pair of them a long time ago, in fact it was my first pair. So when I bought them I really had no clue what I was looking for, and I happened to have a pair that wouldn't "seal" with eachother when they were closed, I don't know if this is common with this line of cymbals or not.

My next pair was a pair of Zildjian Amir hats, but that's another story altogether. They were a step up, but they are a pretty crappy pair in my opinion too. Perhaps that's why they aren't made anymore.

Current pair is Zildjian Quick Beats. I'm not liking them lately though, so I might be looking for another pair, probably Sabian HHX's.

Holy crap, what a dick! I did comprehend your post...and your question. Anyone who buys gear just based on a recorded sound is just plain...well, nevermind.

Well, as someone who has used Paiste cymbals for years - let me give you some advice....I wouldn't buy those hi-hats they have a really pronounced Mid-range sound to me. (and yes, I know quite a bit about recording - I have a 16-track home studio, and began recording bands in 1985, and ran an audio production company for almost 10 years.)

If you want something that will sound similar to Copeland's sound, the 13" size would get you in the ball park - but the Power and Heavy thickneses will be kind of clunky sounding....they won't have the finesse he was getting from the 602's. (The 602 line was, overall, a very thin line of cymbals. So, you may want to look at the Paiste Signature "Full" style - which is probably the closest thing to the 602's...I played 602's during the early 80's, and loved them.....I wish I still had them....but they are aren't as crisp/clear sounding as the Signatures.

Just-my-not-so-humble-but-very-informed-on-this-particular-subject-opinion. :D

I think he used Rudes around that period if I'm not mistaken. Or old 602's...

Hey man, Tim Alexander used that old ass Zildjian Impulse (pre-Scimitar) ride on Frizzle Fry and Sailing the Seas of Cheese so anything's possible!!! heh

According to an issue of MD that I picked up, the Impulse series was Zildjian's high-end heavy series before the Z came out, and they became obsolete, hence discontinued. However, according to the same issue, Impulse rides are still fairly common, because people like the ping aspect of it. Sorta like you'll see guys using K custom crashes, with a Z custom ride. Doesn't seem to fit, but apparently it sounds good.

I actually like my Schimitar ride. It's nice and pingy, and LOUD. Eventually I'll get an A Custom ride or something for versatility, but for now this works fine. I actually fine it to have more ping than the ping ride.

I actually kinda liked my ride too, at times anyway. The bell was freaking huge and soooooo loud!

So why do you buy gear, b/c you see ads in a magazine? The only place I ever play drums is in my studio. Hence, the only thing I care about is the recorded sound. Ask any competent recording engineer - the sound of the drums has much more to do with the quality of the kit sound than the mics used or their placement. Great sounds on tape originate at the source.

Fafnir777 - thanks for the advise. I'll check out those signatures!

No, I don't buy gear because of ads or because my favorite drummer plays it. I go to the store, bang on stuff, and buy what sounds best to my ears.

Quality of the gear is important but I think any nice pair of hats will sound good recorded. Zildjian, Paiste, Sabian, Istanbul...all make terrific hats that will sound wonderful in your studio. I'm just suggesting you go to a drum store, if you can, to try stuff out. That's all.
