Members Rumor
Hello all, I have a kinda silly question. The drummer in my band is thinking about spray painting his kick drum's head. (Not batter side) I'd like to know if anyones done this and/or if its a bad thing to do. Like will it sound like crap, or have any noticable effect. Thanks all. Members lucho_84
i've known people that have doe that. truth is. it depends alot on how evenly and how thick the coat is. don't cake it on. keep it as thin as possible
Members AtillaTheHungry
Unless you nuke it with paint, it isn't going to actually hurt the sound. Like he said, just don't cake it on. If there is a hole cut in there I really wouldn't worry about it too much, because that pretty much kills the resonant head in the first place. My guitarist did some artwork on the BD head for another drummer. I can ask what he used. Though it was just the logo, he didn't paint the entire head. I'd say decide if you want to go black, clear or coated for your background by that kind of head and don't go too crazy with the paint. Shouldn't have a major affect. Members Ignited
It shouldn't be a problem. If some dudes can slap 400 decals on their bass drum heads and still have them sound good, then a light coat of paint shouldn't have any effect. I've never done it myself, but I've heard that the biggest problem people have with this is that the paint has trouble adhering to the head if you use a smooth head, so most people would recommend a textured (coated) head so the paint will stick better. Also, there are several places now where they'll put custom logos on your head...just send them a computer file, and they'll make a drumhead out of it. It's pricey ($100+) but it's cool to know that you could take a digital photo of just about anything, and then put it on your head. Don't worry too much about the sound with the paint on it...a little spraypaint won't make that much difference.
Members rumblebelly
I noticed a change in sound when I silkscreened my band's logo on it. It made it more resonant and papery sounding for some reason.
Members Rumor
Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll do the background black (it's a clear head) and then our singer (artistic) can do a design or logo. Right now its just plain ugly and you can see our drummers, get this, Pirates of Darkwater pillow sitting in there! Thanks again. Dustin

Dustin Well, rather than painting black on a clear head, why not just buy a black head? Then you'll put less paint on it overall. Just a suggestion. Also, the coated thing makes sense too. The black heads are kinda slick, so I'm not sure what would adhere to it very well

Painted it gloss black and it looks really good. Scratched it up with sandpaper first so it would adhere better. Its a nice improvment and will get by for the time being. Members Drummerboy_25
If you get the extra $$$ to buy a black batter drumhead what you should do is first buy some clear decal paper and get your guitarist to design something on the compter. Then when that's done print ift off onto the decal paper and stick it where ever you want it on the head. it will look good on the black head since the sticker paper is clear. I hope this helps you out. Elliott

Nice sarcasm, but: Perhaps you are under the impression that automotive paint is thick, but it is actually quite thin.

I'm curious, with these decal sheets, is it like they're just sickers, or do you have to adhere them with something else? One I saw said you have to buy some spray stuff or something, didn't make a lot of sense to me. Dustin
