Sabian SR2 cymbals

This seems like a cool idea. Sabian has started offering refurb'd cymbals to the public at great prices. Because of the way they re-process them, you can't be completely sure which series you are getting, but when you have a drum shop showing you videos of every single one, you sure can find the ones that sound good!

Seams like a good idea, that shop has good video's for cymbals, so you get a better idea what they sound like with a kit

I saw those on memphisdrumshop, looks cool...I might buy one of those for my next ride.

Some of them sound really great. My ears are telling me some of them that I think came from the HH/HHX realm sound the best...

I when and listen to more of the samples today and your right.They have got some gems in there, might be the winning ticket to get Sabian back on there feet.

I didn't realize they weren't "on their feet." What gives you that idea?

At any rate, factory-refurb'd cymbals sounds like a killer idea. Especially when they are HALF THE PRICE! I'm going to be watching these videos, that's for sure.

Same here^^^, I listened to several of the videos and there are definitely some gems to be had. I also would trust Memphis drum Shop to pick the best sounding of the lot to try and sell. I have never purchased anything from MDS but I don't see them as selling garbage. You just don't sell 3000 + items on ebay with 100% feedback by selling junk. I will definitely be watching these.

What's with the color? They don't look like normal Sabians. Are these things relathed or hammered?

Buncha layoffs of experienced workers.

Sure, I've heard about that -- but the reason for it was that they had increased their production beyond what the demand would bear. The layoffs, while unfortunate, were a course correction they needed to make. I don't think they were ever in danger of going under.

I would bet they are. Some of these were probably cracked, and needed to be re-processed somehow. I wonder if any that were previously damaged will have stress points prone to damage in the future? There's no warranty on them.

how do you refurb a cymbal? the only cymbal wot needs a refurb is likely cracked, is it not?

I was thinking the same thing. I saw that they stated you could still use their return/trade in but they had no warranty. Usually when a product is remanufactured/refurbished, the factory will provide a warranty. When I don't see that, I figure it wasnt remanufactured to previous specifications, or they feel that they will be much more prone to damage/failure.

Some kind of warranty would have been nice seeing as how its coming from the factory. What happens when you set it up to play, take a few swings and ka-rack...

Also, its tough to quantify the "half the price" thing since you may be swinging at a B8, right?

Its certainly a cool idea and clearly they have some sweet samples available, but it'd be nice to see Sabian at least provide some kind of a warranty on these.

BTW, my favorite is this ride...very nice indeed.

I understand them to all be cast cymbals at least according to Memphis Drum Shop

They are only refurbing the B20 cast bronze cymbals.

Probably forge welding in a new piece of bronze, beating the {censored} out of it with a hammer, then a light lathing.

Hey guys, just wanted to clear up some confusion about the Sabian SR2 cymbals. These are refurbished cymbals that once started out as an AA, AAX, HH, or HHX. Sabian only uses cast product for this line. These were never B8, B8pro, or sheet cymbals. None of the SR2 cymbals were ever cracked, melted or re-cast.

We were a bit skeptical when we first heard about these new cymbals but after testing them out our staff is very impressed with the quality, look and price of these cymbals.

Does that mean they are only rehammered/relathed used cymbals? If so, why bother with the reprocessing at all when you could just sell them as used versions of the original model?

Sabian can make their money again, instead of letting someone else make it.

I understand, but I meant to say that Sabian could just be selling the used pieces that come back to them, if that's what these cymbals are.

I suppose they decided that perhaps some of the lines would sell better than others, that they wouldn't want to price on individual quality, and that any warped cymbals would never sound quite the same as they ought to. I mean, we want a picture of every little defect and all the grime and whatever else on each individual cymbal when we're buying private. I doubt Sabian wants to take the time to photograph and list each used cymbals individual qualities. I think perhaps it's just one of those business decisions where they try to pick the safest, most consistent route.
