Members space cred
Hey all, anyone else suffer from hip pain, lower back pain? I don't know for sure if its drumming thats causing it... but it definitly gets worse when I've been playing a lot. had it for a while so it comes and goes, which is why i've never actually been to the doctor yet, but I thought i'd pop in and get your experiences. I'm self-taught so I don't have the best technique. I also have a {censored}ty stool, but I'm picking one up on my way home from work today. I think that should help. anyone stretch? Yoga? Radical reconstructive surgery?
Members faileddrummer
Get a stool with a back so you can sit up comfortable. You want to play with good posture. When you play, you want to sit so your snare if right at crotch level. That's all I got.

A wobbly throne isn't going to help with your back. Make sure that the one you pick up isn't built cheaply ... you get what you pay for. Make sure that sucker is SOLID, and isn't going to wear out quickly - better off buying a good throne once than buying a bunch of cheap POS's that loosen up. Members Longfuse
Perhaps take some Alexander technique lessons? Sort out your posture when standing, walking and sitting and you nip a lot of problems in the bud as you advance in years. I would have recommended seeing an osteopath (many will watch you play an instrument and give advice on posture etc...as well as sorting out any joint/muscle pain), but in the US the training isn't as good as in the UK: in a bid to get officially recognised, the practice became watered down in the US...according to the osteopath I used to see. Members boxofrocks
Doc told me most back issues are weak muscles and spasms. I've had a crap back since my early 20s sciatic nerve and muscles in kidney areas and spine between shoulder blades, and most of it is due to weak back muscles. Causing all the other problems. Sometimes like today it hurts to take a deep breath and can be a real bitch to just deal. Sleep on a FIRM bed, and do exceesizes to strengthen your back muscles. I'm guilty of not doing the them then it hurts all the time till I get fed up and do them for a few weeks.
Members danrothmusic
exercise is probably your best bet, really. Even if you just do sit-ups in the morning, that will be much better for your back than doing nothing at all.
