WHAT DO RIVITS DO?!?!

Rivets give you a "sizzle" sound that keeps going after the cymbal quiets down. Used to be more popular than they are now. More common in some types of music than others, but even guys like Ginger Baker had them. (Check out Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home" for a good demo.)

Effect is variable depending on the cymbal and the number of rivets. There's more than a few jazz guys who have one or two rivets in their go-to ride. Usually, though, you'll see a larger number on a crash cymbal used strictly for effect. Some guys even put them in hats.

One drawback is that you can't turn them off. That's led some drummers to use an alternative that's removable. Back in the day I used to have one somewhat like this:

Or you can make your own with a simple chain-pull:

small piece of electrical tape on a dime with it hanging off one side, put it in the middle of the cymbal bow. That will give you a great representation. I like to have a sizzle to my left side ride, mostly rode for b-sections/solos in jazz.

How long is the tape cearlywine? Does it really "sizzle"
