Me "singing" a bit of Heart & Stevie

Well, I tried to just do some impromptu singing but...yes. It sucks. I hear this. lol. Please give your kindest of critiques. I accidentally cut off at the end of the bit of the Heart one, but that's ok. The least heard the better I think! (Even though I've been writing songs for a little while, there's no singing on any of 'em. I've been singing since I was little, but as you can tell, I've had no training, have issues, and I'm not used to using a microphone or singing FOR anyone else)

In case the songs are unrecognisable, they're Dog & Butterfly by Heart and Angel by Fleetwood Mac (Stevie Nicks). Amusingly, I've tried to harmonise on Angel. lol

Thanks *cringe*

The below link is just my general Soundclick page, but you'll see the songs DB and Angel. They're the ones. Blegh.

I don't understand why everyone always posts their singing and first thing they do is insult themselves as much as possible! LOL Human nature I guess. Especially people who have no need to do that at all.

Well, I think you have a beautiful voice. It's the light and agile type which is something I love. However, since it's so light and agile, I think it's easier to sing without much support. So while you sound great, you sound a little too "quiet" and monotone, and I think you should work on supporting your voice more to get different dynamic levels into your singing. However, the tone, phrasing and interpretation are lovely as heck.

Oh wow, really? I actually came on here, expecting either no response at all or people saying I suck and to get out and not to come back! lol

I totally get what you're saying and agree completely. I know that as soon as I feel people are "listening" to me (even in a distant way like posting a link on a forum), I go all hush and quiet. I want to avoid that. I just need to keep practicing and try and get carried away. I also need to keep listening and playing back what I hear so I can work out just how to convey getting more into it.

Thank you!

Advice from more people please...go on, I can take it! *ready* lol

Oh, I also am sick at the moment. I didn't say anything cause I didn't want to use it as an excuse for sucking. I have some kind of throat infection and strange not quite entirely there cold. I don't even know why I recorded myself NOW while I'm like this, but in a strange and stupid way, it was to take some of the pressure off myself. Meaning, I can't be expected to sing as well as I normally might if I'm sick. Heheh. Anyway, yeah...

Well your quiet tones are good too, so keep doing that of course, the main thing when listening to you was that I loved the softness, but kept hoping to hear you let out a little, even if the song is meant to be sung soft, just to hear those dynamics and emphasis on some words and that variation, would make your singing more effective. But other than that, there really wasn't much anything to complain. lol

Oh, there's also one I did a while ago called Mr Moth Works in the Nose Department. It's one of my piano based songs I wrote and it's just got me going "la la" and stuff as a sort of guide melody, but have a listen to that one too. It doesn't reveal much about my voice I guess, but it's another thing to listen to anyway. Meh.

Yes, thanks for that, William. I again know what you mean. In Angel there wasn't much to be sung out, but in D & B there definitely was, but I didn't do it, annoyingly. lol

Also, in Angel, if I'd recorded the whole song, towards the end I'd have been doing much more "breaking out"...if you're familiar with the song, you'd know Stevie goes for it at the end...but I didn't do the whole song because secretly I'm scared I'd sound really bad if I tried to do that sort of stuff. lol

Oh, and 2 more things! lol

1. I tend to love hearing people like Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson of Heart, etc...people with much more powerful and exciting voices than me. I hear myself more as a boring sweet little voice, which annoys me. That's why I don't really like my own stuff much.

2. I'm also always aware of not breathing really heavily or "gasping" into the microphone, cause it amplifies everything obviously, and also not saying P or T too obviously cause it does that pop sound, so I'm trying to sort of modify that stuff, and I think this is impacting on my singing too - meaning I'm getting the result of sounding quiet and muted and dulled. Hmm.

Anybody else? *resounding silence*

If nobody else has any opinions, and William, you don’t have any further opinion on my guiding vocal in Mr Moth Works in the Nose Department, I will have to put some more of me singing on here for more feedback. What a threat, eh!? lol
