Is there a real difference in terms of training to sing...

This depends on what you mean by training. Generally speaking, technique is technique--all good vocal instructors will work on the fundamentals of breathing, posture, and relaxation of muscle groups; all will have students sing scales to develop accuracy of pitch, etc.

The stylistic features that define musical genres are usually a later phase in training, and not every vocal instructor even goes there. It's analogous to law schools, which first & foremost emphasize training a student to think like a lawyer and only later add some courses on specific areas of the law. Vocal coaches tend to emphasize the development of strong fundamentals that will allow you to go wherever you want to go.

This is useful, as you don't really know where your singing will go. So you like heavy metal music now? Perhaps when one day you'll have a conversion experience and realize the wonders of cowboy music? If you've got a good foundation, you can go wherever your heart wants to go.

Breath Support: Same.

Placement: Different

Learning to sing in tune: Same

Vowel Modulation: Different

Other forms of colour and stylizin: Different.

Generally hard rock favours quite a nasaly, twangy kinda sound... maybe with a bit of an operatic flare.

if you're worried about a vocal instructor changing your style, bring that up while you're shopping around. some instructors will ONLY teach in one style while others are there to teach the foundations and help you to develop YOUR style.

i was fortunate enough to get an instructor (i just started my lessons recently) who does the latter. she has students who sing everything from broadway to viking metal. knowing that when i go in there she's not going to turn my singing into something i don't want it to be helps motivate me to coninue my lessons and push me to become a better singer!
