Turntables & Sampling - Portishead

I was just reading about how Portishead, on their first album, sampled various things. But on their second album, they recorded their own sounds and pressed them to vinyl.

So, do Portishead pretty much spin samples on turntables instead of using a digital/analogue sampler?

Do any other bands do this and is it a viable possibility?

Like, just say you are an experimental rock band, you could incorporate a DJ to play vinyl and mix and scratch it to provide more texture to everything. Isn't this what lame bands like Linkin Park do.. and is there examples of people who do it so it's not so cheesy?

Live Human are an excellent band, I forget who their DJ is but hes pretty good. If you go to the Archive at turntableradio.com then check the playlists and you can listen to some of their tracks.

One track they have a 'Q&A' between the dj and the drummer (who is {censored}ing awesome), so like the dj does a pattern on the AAAHHHHH sample and then the drummer copies it. Very cool stuff.
