Members grace_slick
Thought I'd have a go at this for fun. As is my "thing", the first verse is the original key and the second verse I go up an octave. Especially with guy's songs I always feel awkward singing in their own key as I think it sounds dull for my voice, seeing as I'm a girl. Meh. http://picosong.com/9vf
Members Shadowdusk
Love this song didn't expect to hear it from you though, but I like what I hear nonetheless! I actually think the lower key you started in might fit the song better, it's softer and dunno, I think it fits the overall feeling more. You should reserve your high notes for songs that need more power, I think.
Members jvardon
Definitely not dull. The beginning had a funny tone on a few of the words, my genius self closed the page before I could re-listen and it'll take a while to load again, so I can't say which words right now. You also had a little trouble when you first went high but you seemed to smoothen that out. A good performance from our resident queen of song! Members Masklin
You don't sound super comfortable when you shift octave, but otherwise a good cover. I do feel like, however, that you really need to get this power business over and done with - when there are no dynamics, even the best voice becomes less interesting after a while. You said you didn't want sugar-coating, so don't rage on me, please
Members grace_slick
No no, no rage! I totally get what you're saying and appreciate the honesty. I worry about this too, and have for years. Especially when I do my own original songs...some of them are different and unusual so that's ok, but many do tend to sound the same even though instrumentally or rhythmically they're not. But yes, if the vocal is always the same, never a heap of light and shade, etc, or power and soft dynamics, it'll be dull. Con sarn it. lol Thanks!! Members grace_slick
Hey Vardy, which words sound strange? It may have been me trying to do “Neil Youngisms”.
Members grace_slick
Ugh, I just listened again. I sound nasal in the lower bit, then I quietly cough up a lung in the middle instrumental, and then I sound shrill and odd in the higher bit. Craptastic. I think, quite honestly, that singing drugs me, and afterwards I think I sound better than I actually do…and then when I “come down” the next day, I listen again and am chagrined by my own self. Lol. Members tehJESSEH
I love this song, I think you did a great job Grace! I think the nasally voice and "funny tone" were just you, like you said, emulating Neil Young. Nothing wrong with that here and there... you should hear how much I try to emulate Jeff Tweedy when I sing Wilco songs. I definitely preferred the lower octave with this cover, but overall it was definitely good.
Members grace_slick
Yeah, when I was singing it I was attempting to do a Neil impersonation. I’m always concerned when I sing guy stuff, even if it’s easily in my range, that it’ll sound dull and un-resonant. Anyway, thanks!
Members jvardon
Hey Vardy, which words sound strange? It may have been me trying to do “Neil Youngisms”. Just re-listened, I think it was the Youngisms.lol. It's "I wanna live, I wanna give," I think you should make the accent more pronounced and prominent so that it's a little more obvious that it's a change of accent than you slurring a little. Members Howie22
Grace, I liked it overall. I liked the lower part much better than the higher. I agree with your description of the higher parts being a bit "shrill." It sounds to me like you should transpose the song to a bit higher key so you can sing it somewhere in between. While still within your range, perhaps both the low and the high are both outside of your comfort zone? Also, I think your voice is way too hot in the mix. If you brought the backing track up a bit, a lot of the "problems" that you hear would blend themselves into the mix.
Members grace_slick
Hey Howie, yeah I know it’d be best to transpose it and even out the vocals and backing track but with these karaoke clips, I don’t have the capabilities to do that. I just record them direct from Youtube by holding the mic at the speakers, and then have to turn the volume of that track up to try and get a closer match to my own vocal track which I record afterwards. It’s awkward. And if I transpose the songs up or down in my DAW, they go weird. Lol.
