M-Audio has announced the first in a new line of near-field monitors: the Studiophile SP-5B. The SP-5B is a 2-way bi-amped bookshelf speaker with 75W of power. The driver, port, enclosure and amplifier of the Studiophile SP-5B were all designed as one system, rather than assembled from already existing components. Great care was taken to use materials and designs that reject inaccuracy in the audio domain.

The StudioPhile SP-5B is designed to overcome all the limitations of conventional near field reference monitors within the digital audio environment. This system delivers a wide range of frequency response by employing two extraordinary drivers and unique crossover technology. It boasts a stable and balanced low-mid frequency response along with a defined MF and HF response as well. Both drivers are magnetically shielded for DTMP users (Desk Top Music Production).

The Studiophile SP-5B studio monitors will carry an MSRP of $399 per pair.

    StudioPhile SP-5B Features:

    • The SP-5B's tweeter is swivel mounted so that you can adjust its position and direction. This unique feature accommodates various loudspeaker-mounting positions, allowing great control over imaging.
    • The tweeter has a magnetically shielded 3/4" silk dome with Ferro-Fluid damping. Magnetic shielding minimizes reaction time, and the dome also minimizes resonance by adapting a unique internal damping technology.
    • The 5 1/4" woofer is has a magnetically shielded mineral-filled polypropylene cone, with a high temperature voice coil and damped rubber surround.
    • The Sub-Frequency Port discharges extreme low frequencies under 30 Hz. The SP-5B is designed to take advantage of this port to generate extreme low frequencies despite the small footprint of the enclosure.
    • Specially designed network and power amplifiers properly distribute low, mid, and high frequency reducing loss of sound and distortion.
    • The high-end Bi-Amp structure provides smooth transition in the crossover region, and delivering 40W to the bass/mids driver, and 30W to the tweeter. The circuits were optimized to flatten the frequency response and maximize power handling and power output.
