M-Audio announced another addition to their line of affordable condenser microphones--the Aries. The Aries is a condenser microphone designed specifically to capture live vocals.

While condenser microphones offer higher fidelity than dynamic microphones, they have traditionally been confined only to studio use due to their sensitivity to handling and abuse. The Aries employs a special internal shock-mounting technology to minimize handling noise and stand up to the rigors of the road. The cardioid pattern rejects background sound and minimizes feedback on stage.

Aries' capsule is solid brass. The 6-micron evaporated gold diaphragm and integral pop filter combine for sonic sensitivity and the ability to handle high SPLs on stage.

The Aries uses Class A FET transformerless electronics and requires 48 V phantom power. It boasts a frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz. Sensitivity is 13.8 mV/Pa (-37dBV re 1V/Pa), with a maximum SPL for 134dB for 0.5 THD. Equivalent noise level is 17dB (A-weighted). Output impedance is 200 ohms; recommended load impedance of 1,000 ohms. The Aries is 6.6" (168 mm) long with a grille diameter of 1.57" (40 mm); weight is 9.2 oz. (260 g).

M-Audio's Aries is currently shipping at USD $149.95 MSRP.
