  • Roger Waters' bass effect on One Of These Days . . .

It sounds like Roger's using delay during the beginning of the song (pretty obvious), but I'm curious about the mid-section where things quiet down (drums stop; extremely eerie sounding part). The bass seems to fade in and out, almost like a vibrato or panning effect with one channel missing. Does anyone know how this is done? It's just an incredably amazing effect....

As a reference, I've been listening to this from the Pompeii video . . the overdriven Precision Bass tone at the beginning of One Of These Days is incredible. So ominous.

It's actually Gilmour & Waters both on bass. Waters' bass has dead strings, and comes in second.

I'm glad you finally realized the power of the overdriven Precision bass, though.

isn't that a Binson Echorec machine they're using on that song?

edit: I may be thinking of something else from them.

You can come pretty close with a simple delay, but those tape echo units have a unique sound that IMO cannot be duplicated...

Any delay will do for the main part.

I never said there wasn't a delay, but there's also two basses playing!!! You can hear the second one come in a few seconds after the first one, because it's alot deader sounding!!!

Both basses play the same (2 !) notes.
With a bit of tweaking on the delay regeneration you can easily duplicate the 2nd bass.
