CD Duplication problem - Artwork

Hi,

We're having a nightmare getting our CD pressed. if you have a moment, please read through what has happened and if possible, leave your thoughts - we're not sure if we have a case or not.

We supplied our artwork for the Onbody CD print on the duplicators template. The template was labeled (from the inside out) Centre hole (21mm), Mirror band (no dimension) , then the rest of the CD. The mirror band looked to be around 18mm, and so we thought the usual clear plastic inner to the cd.

What we wanted to do was to leave that section clear and print on the rest - our logo would be 'falling off' the CD - ie. it wouldn't fit as its edges would go over the edge of the cd and the plastic inner.

However, we have later realised this cannot be done.

They sent us our artwork back having filled in the 'mirror band'; and printed the background colour all the way to the centre hole - something we did not want.

We called the company before we went ahead with the job, to make sure the area they labelled as a mirror band would be left clear, which they confirmed - and so, as i'd had a mail asking to sign off on the artwork, i replied confirming.

When we recieved the CD's, the 'mirror band' had not been left clear and so meant the artwork was wrong.

When we compained about this, they ignored the phone conversation numerous times but kept referring to the email i had sent to sign off on the artwork - now remember that the artwork was only signed off after we had had it confirmed by them that we would have a clear 'mirror band'

i have been using ' ' around the term 'mirror band' because i think they have incorrectly labelled their template. having searched online i found this:

Clearly on this CD, the mirror band is nowhere near 18mm as depicted on thier template. It looks like on their template, they have lumped the mirror band in with the stacking ring and the plastic hub.

Having had this conversation with them, they now say it can't be done by them, but we have seen planty of CDs where this middle band is left clear - like most of the blank CD-R's you buy with print on the front.

So, we're wondering what can be done - obviously we don't want to make any legal moves if there's no case for it - but on top of the money we spent getting the originals printed, we're having to spend more to get these reprinted as they will not admit fault.

Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated,

many thanks

Andy

what software did you prep and submit the art with?

There are several with templates for CD labeling/silkscreening and pit art.

That they printed 'edge to edge' makes little sense, unless your art was not scaleable, or in a format they could not modify.

If the art was not as you wanted it, you should have insisted they send you a revision reprint. By signing off, unless on the sign off you wrote in that the band was incorrect, you are pretty much out of luck.
