Born to teach?

Hi,

i'm just wondering what your thoughts are on teaching. More specifically, what it takes to become a good teacher. I've been playing drums for 20 years now and i've been a session musician for the last 6 or 7. i'm currently going through a dry patch with regards to session work so i'm trying to think of other ways of using my music skills to bring some cash in.

I've thought about joining a covers band. In fact, i just stood in for a guy over the weekend and made a modest fee.

I've spoke to my family about it and they reckon i should teach drums. It had crossed my mind before, but i just don't think i've got what it takes to teach drums. Personally, i don't think i'm technical enough. I'm mailny a rock drummer who focuses on groove and feel. i can play most rudiments but have never practiced them enough, and my sight reading is not that advanced.

if someone was to ask me to read and play a 7/8 beat incorporating parradidles etc etc. i'd prob make a fool of myself. but if they were to ask me to play a classic rock tune with feel and passion, i'd be right at home. so if i did decide to teach, i reckon i'd probably have to learn a whole bunch of stuff myself.

I've got a couple of friends who teach, and they said i'd easily be able to do it. they even said they would get me loads of work because they have to turn down stuff constantly. and without being big headed or anything, i think my timing and feel is better than theirs. but i just don't think i'm cut out to do it.

I've heard plenty of my favourite rock drummers say they couldn't teach, even though they're amazing at what they do.

what do you guys think? do you need to be a technical wizz to teach? and does any of you guys have experience of teaching? maybe you could offer some tips

any help would be really appreciated

thanks
