Calling music producers

Hi !

I am in my final year at University, studying for a BA in Music - I am currently compiling and writing my dissertation on the working ethics and practices of the record producer.

I would like to talk to some producers to get their viewpoints on the industry, practices and thoughts, etc.

If you would be able to help I would be very grateful, many thanks,

Ensisyz.

Every producer seems to be different; I know of one legendary producer who never even went to the studio while one of his artsts was tracking - he had an intercom set up on his desk upstairs.... And I know of another who will spend his 80-100 hour weeks doing all the editing, comping and tuning himself, because he knows what he wants to hear at the end of the process and doesn't believe that anyone else can get what he wants.

Most producers are somewhere in the middle...

But seriously, how can you do a dissertation on something like that? Is going out to a bar or a golf course supposed to be work or play? (Lost of business is conducted in both spots, though so is lots of drinking and over-par games). Is being 'in the studio' with an artist enough to count as work, even if the producer is asleep on the couch in the lounge?

And there are those times when a producer doesn't appear to be working, but is instead thinking about a project, or having meetings with folks, driving around while listening to demos in the car...

Define 'work ethic' and 'practices', with the appropriate devations from a statistical norm (because statistically, NO producers are normal), and perhaps you can get some information that is useable to you.

Many thanks to those who have sent me their thoughts etc.

I appreciate this is such a wide subject matter to cover with no wrong or right answers.

I used the terms 'working ethics' and 'practices' purely to find out different opinions of how a producer works within their environment.

Something along the lines of -

How a producer feels is the best way to interact with the artist or band he/she is working with, How a producer copes with problems arising from the artist/band, Do they have influences from any other producers, experiences, etc.

Any thoughts or ideas will be of use. It wasn't a question to be summed up in one sweeping statement by any means and does not need to take into consideration whether or not producers are statistically normal.
