Ok, so this is pretty depressing to those of you who still have the "pie in the sky" dream or think that any of those "American Idols" are going to make any real $.

I wish some one had shot me this before I went thru the {censored} trench. Punch line...do as much as you can your self.

Read this Albini piece - he is in no way exagerating.

Interesting article. I agree, I wouldnt complain if I didnt get rich of my music, but in this case the record industry is getting rich of the band's hard work and creativity. That's just wrong.

I'm a diy guy all the way, and I'm not just saying that 'cause my band sucks to hard to ever get signed anyway

If we(my band) ever get our act together we'll do as much as we can ourselves and NOone will make any money of it.

i haven't read this article in a while but from what i remember it leaves out a major point. that being, most major labels (or 1 deep subsidiaries for that matter) put out around 20 albums in a year. say each cost $250,000 to record, that is 5 million dollars. thats not even counting tour support, manufacturing, and especially promotion. out of thos 20 albums only 1 is likely to actually be a hit and really make money. that album covers all the losses for the company. if that album sells a few million copies, then that company will make in the end somewhere around 15 million (this is JUST an estimate). yes they can make a but load of money but it is a HIGH risk business. businesses like that have high returns usually, if any. think about it, would you want to finance even five albums a year on an indie level? basically meaning, less cost on recording, promotion, touring, etc. but also much less exposure and MUCH less distribution. its a tough game, all i can say is that if you want your own label, make it a corporation so you can't lose your home.
