It depends somewhat on what style you are focusing on, and also how serious you are about it.

If you are looking to one day play in clubs, I would purchase Technics 1200 turntables, as these are the decks found in almost every club and have been the industry standard for over 20 years.

The Vestax PDX-2000 is also one of the more popular high-end turntables, it allows for a much broader range of pitch shifting, and its specs are superior to Technics 1200, however they have not proven to have the durability that Technics has. Technics tables have been known to last for 10+ years, the things are built like tanks. From what I hear, Vestax's are not as durable.

Other popular brands are Numarks, Stantons, and Gemini's.

From what I have heard, Numarks are touchy and fall apart,

stantons are decent, and geminis are {censored}e.

If you want, go to 123dj.com and check out their turntables, they have most popular models along with pictures and specs.
