Who else is tired of R&B artists butchering The National Anthem?

Yes, EightString, I agree. There's really no excuse for a singer to mess with the National Anthem. Christina Aguilera's flub on Sunday was appalling--even though the pressure is surely on for a Superbowl performance, this is a song that's been drummed into Americans for their entire lives, and messing up the lyrics seems careless & unprofessional. Then there are the R'n'B or New Country types who trill into the stratosphere; this to my mind hijacks the song and makes it all about the singer. Then, of course, there's Roseanne Barr....

The clip you posted was perfect (in many ways, some less patriotic [] than others!).

By the way, I'm not excessively patriotic--it's not about that, it's about ego interfering with music, which I dislike wherever I may find it.

Narcissism seems to be becoming increasingly common. Those self taken MySpace shots ring any bells?

Just read up on Roseanna Barr, WOW! She thought it was funny? Twisted!!!

She would have been killed for that in some places and times.

To be fair, the Star Spangled Banner is notorious for being difficult to sing due to it's required large range.

But yeah in general I find the embelleshing labored onto songs by R&B singers a bit much.

Looks like country artists have actually fared much better:

Faith Hill, a little embellished but not overwrought

Carrie Underwood nails it (Acapella no less)

But these RnB artists are just trying to imitate Whitney's iconic performance.

Glad you liked it. I have a personal connection to that clip, since the lovely lady singing in it happens to be my wife. So yes, indeed...

:D

Oops! What I really meant to say is that she is strikingly dignified and professional. ;)

But you're a lucky man. I'll bet you two make beautiful music together!
