Sound Quality

Being active, the output obviously went higher. The sound is basically similar to stock, but much cleaner. Great lows, thin nasaly highs, everything you'd expect from traditional J pickups. The big plus to the EMG-J Set is the loss of the buzz when the volume knobs are offset. When backing down the tone, it still has a good quality of tone, not the standard dead flat sound.

Reliability/Durability

General Comments

It was briliant of EMG to offer this as a set. I've also had EMG DC35's, and P-J sets (with different preamps). If you're looking to clean up a J-bass, this is definitely the way to go. Other alturnatives would also require alot more wiring (if you're going active) and would cost quite a bit more.
