How to sing two notes at once!

Hey everybody,

I'm new to the harmony central forums (got my account about 5 minutes ago). I'm a singer/guitarist with a couple solo albums ("Too Proud to Beg" by Gianmarc is my latest) and a Youtube channel where I post guitar and voice lessons. If you're interested, I've got links to both in my signature.

Anyway, I did a lesson on how to sing two notes at once a while ago, and I thought it might be something many of you haven't seen before, so I figured I'd post that first. Check it out!

Well, I don't know if you're planning on staying here

or just want to garner youtube hits but either way:wave:

welcome to the forum!

I didn't hear a harmonic with your voice and

I wonder how you'd implement this in a song when

you cough at the end?

@JohnBenussi: Thanks for the welcome! I'd be lying if I said that I don't want people to become interested in my music and my youtube channel as a result of making posts in here, but I also genuinely enjoy helping people learn guitar/voice through my posts.

That's too bad you can't hear the harmonics. It's funny, almost everyone I've demonstrated this technique to says one of two things, either "That's awesome!" or "I don't hear the second note." My guess is that some folks' ears can pick it up, and some can't. I think it's also a lot easier to hear in person than when it's recorded on a lousy built-in laptop mic.

The cough at the end was just because I was sitting in a cold basement when I recorded the video. The technique isn't at all hard on your voice.

As for practical uses for the technique, none of my songs have called for this yet, so as of now it's just a fun trick :). My usual fare is pretty straight forward rock/metal singing (my voice part is tenor).

Here's an example if you're curious:

Damn I'm jealous of the guitar work, sounds sweet!

I have a very discernible ear so I know if its there I

will be able to hear it but why not record

your trick with a mic and sync the video to it?

Edit: I listened and watched the video again

and yes I do hear two different pitches:thu:

It's too bad the volume on the harmonic is much lower.

Thanks for the kind words :). You're right though, the fundamental pitch is a good bit louder than the harmonic on the recording. That's a good idea about recording another vid using a better mic and then swapping the audio. I'll have to do that one of these days.

By the way, I checked out your soundclip link and you have an awesome voice!

@Throatsinger: I checked out your youtube vid, very cool! It reminded me a bit of the guy that made me want to try and figure out how to add harmonics to my bag of singing tricks. I can't remember his name, but he was the "opening act" for the Dalai Lama when I saw him speak about 4 years ago (really amazing day). He had a guitar-like instrument he accompanied himself with and favored the super low drone sound that comes from down in the chest. I'm pretty sure I heard him do three notes at once! Your harmonics are clear as day though, definitely inspired me to practice the technique a bit more and get better at it. Thanks for posting :thu:
