Help With Midi Setup

Ok I'm new to midi. I'm going to get a midi controller to control for now just one rack synth and later more when I get some more money. I'll also use it some for my computer for software synths. My question is how is it setup? The midi controller goes to keyboard to the midi in, right. But if I want to control more than one is that what the midi thru is for? It's a pretty dumb question and I would just test it out myself but I don't have the gear yet and won't for a little while so any help would be appreciated. :)

use the midi out on the keyboard to go to the midi in of the module.

if you get another module, run a cable from the midi thru of the first module to the midi in of the 2nd one.

then you can give them each their own midi channels.

you can string 3 modules like this. if you get more than that, it's time to look into getting a dedicated midi patch bay.

if you use softsynths, it's midi out from the keyboard to midi in of your computer's midi interface.

from there, it's handled by your sequencer program.
