Just a shout to anyone who lives in the Capital Region, NY... I'll be at the Bayou tomorrow night (Sat) on Pearl St. I know there are a few Albany residents on this board... FMP and others... if you are looking for something to do .... (well actually I can think of plenty to do that's better than this... but it would be nice to hear how well they have keys in the mix) feel free and see my cheezy ass cover band in all our cheesy ass splendor. I'll be the fat guy onstage with the Triton! :D

I grew up near Albany as well. Still have a lot of family living South of Albany, in various small towns.

Been in Texas for about 20 years, since coming to Austin to go to UT.

Albany has a lot of interesting history. Although, Central Avenue is not what it used to be. Seems that Arbor Hill has really spilled over onto Central and beyond. I remember when Drome Sound used to be right there along Central.

Lark Street isn't the same either -- not as visible of a counter-culture as there was 25 years ago -- though it still retains much of its charm.

What is the university like there? I have a chinese friend going there to pursue a PhD in Comp Sci. However, I didn't get a very good impression from their website that there is any kind of research culture at all... so I'm a little worried for her.

A lot of people from Asia who are looking to do research seem to see USA and not worry too much about why they are actually there... i.e. to do research..

SUNY Albany is known as one of the biggest (if not the biggest) party school in the US. RPI is supposed to be a good college, the place I work for was founded by RPI students/faculty and is now a global company...I checked it out once, for a degree in Digital Art but never ended up going. Nice campus though.

Ohhhhh yeah! Arbor Hill is a bad area! I forgot to get batteries before I got downtown and realized "It's Saturday and all stores are closed. I drove around for 40 minutes looking for an open Rite Aid or Eckerts Drugs before finding a Family Dollar in Arbor Hill. As soon as I stepped out of my car, I felt I was immediately out of my element.
