But first, the prerequisite disclaimer...

It's not really my style of music.

As with any review, it's as important to know the reviewers bias' as it is to read their views. Though I offered to check out BEDM's show when they passed through town, I must admit that having the for-knowledge that Jonny spins records during his performances put me in the pre-disposition that I probably wouldn't be 'into' his music. If that wasn't enough to start out on the wrong foot - I was under the impression that they started playing at 8:50 when in fact they didn't start until 11:00. As I got there at 8:00 so that we could shmooze a bit before their set - I had no choice but to drink a few Baccardi-Cokes before they got there at 10:00. And to top it off - there was a horny young lady, dressed in black, that was vying for my (and Jonnies friend Jason) attention almost all night long.

But I did get to meet the guys, and was taken with their modest, 'good guy' attitudes. I only got to speak briefly with Jonny before the show as there was all the setup to do and a warm-up act that made it rather hard to hold a conversation. I did get to spend some time with their buddy Jason (a real reviewer and a real nice guy) and he reaffirmed my huntch that these are some real nice guys pooring their hearts out into their music. I hadn't checked out the music clips on their website so I didn't what to expect - but within minutes I knew these guys could play. With 2 multi-instrumentalists and a drummer they could not only hold my attention, but make it fun for the audience - not always an easy task, especially from a 3-piece group. The guitar playing was good, Peter's drumming was tight and dynamic, and the keyboard playing, while fairly simplistic, really brought out an interesting, bold sound. What intrigued me most though, was:

1) the record spinning wasn't the typical itchy/scratchy stuff that has board me to tears over the years. It was done very musically and artisticly, and 2) The guys can sing. I can count on one hand the number of bands i've seen in the last year or so that couldn't sing a note if their paycheck depended on it. Sure they can scream or rap or gurgle in angst - but i'm talking about singing, in tune, in time, with feeling.

So, pre-dispositions aside, I guess I'd have to say I liked them. They're fun, energetic, musical, talented, hard-working, and write some good stuff (in all honesty - the lyrics could be stronger, but that comes with time). Still not my favorite style - but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to a friend. And Jonny - Thanks for the CD, hope you got past the cover-art on mine ;-)

Oh yeah...the lady in black was last seen dry-humping a 72 year-old guy on a bar stool. I guess I wasn't her type (thank God).

yo(!). thanks for that. it was great to meet you:)

and oh---before leaving the bar the 'hornball' and the old man ended up on the floor---having slipped off of the bar stool midway through a frisky bout of sloppy drunken grab-ass. I've got a pic of her somewhere.....I'll try to post it up.

And what's that about the heavy accent??? I was at the bar for a few hours and I didn't hear no stinkin' accent....;)

Did you get to listen to my CD or did the cover-art freak you out and ended up flying out the window.
