simple MIDI CONTROLLER or SYNTH?

I bought a yamaha s80 but left it in france when I moved to japan (31Kg!!).

So I'd like to buy another keyboard and since I can use a computer as a sequencer I thought I could simply buy a midi controller like the keystation 88 pro or something similar.

I want to know if it is still interesting to buy a synth since we can have pretty much wonderful sounds and synths on computer. And for example the piano sound is always criticised so what is the decisive advantage of composing with the synths sounds Vs the constantly updatable sound bank you can have on computer?.

I know it's not a very good question but I don't know if I had better buy a $400 or a $2000 keyboard. All in all the dilemma always ends there.

Thank you.

If you have to work with a computer on a daily basis, it might look too much like taking your work with home when you have to fire the computer up again. Perfectly understandable sentiment, really.

Also, this sentiment has even more weight if you don't have a dedicated computer for music production (e.g. you do all your stuff on that machine). I hope to solve this for myself; so that I have a separate music computer and a box where I can do other stuff on - browsing, IRC, downloading, etc. It's not so much that you turn into a mouse clicker (as Darkstorm said); it's that you don't consider your computer to be an instrument because you do many other things with it.

Just don't start about hardware vs. software; in that regard, another forum member made a very memorable quote:

Use a PC. Use a Mac. Use a wax cylinder for all I care. Linkin Park isn't better for using ProTools just as The White Stripes isn't better for using an 8-track reel-to-reel. If you sit there and spew forth how your PC is faster and cheaper than my Mac, all you're really saying is "Hey, look at me! I'm not making music tonight!"

I've found out that it mainly causes holy wars, it's not worth the effort arguing about, and in the meantime nobody's making music because they're too busy typing :). Find out what fits with your workflow, download a bunch of demos and try stuff at a local music store, look at the state of your wallet and then decide :).

Thank you.

My problem is indeed I already have a laptop (and certainly one of the most expensive ones) and do everything with it from internet to movie production, drawing, listening to music etc...

I also am unable to compose without a decent keyboard, so I hesitate between a Maudio keystation-like midi controller 88 keys (If I dare put it in my small appartment) or 61keys, and a real hardware synth like a Yamaha s90es (but really expensive).

All in all I will use the computer as a sequencer!

What are the keybords similar to the old Yamaha S80 (and with USB)???

But since I intend to buy something like the Yamaha s90es which have no sequencer I will anyway plug it with the computer to use Cubase as a Sequencer (and sampler).

So my worry at the moment is : should I buy a MOTIF or a TRITON extreme, which are a lot more expensive and don't have the flexibility or the big screen a computer have for sequencing.

I 'd like to know also if we can upload the samples we have on computer to the MOTIF (or similar concurrent hardware... by the way what are they?) easily?
