Members Allerian
Here's the model. Several (6-7) instruments with 1/4" mono output. One synth with stereo out. I want the mixing/processing setup to fit in a two space rack. Set it up and go. So I need a rack mixer that covers the bases with fx send/return and a flexible fx unit with front panel delay tweakability - and compression would be nice as well. This is noise/ambient, so I seriously don't need high end anything. After having a Behringer mixer, that route makes me feel kinda... Ideas for an alternate cost-effective approach? Members XorAxAx
MOTU UltraLite doubles as a stand-alone, half-U mixer. You can add a half-U MIDI patchbay to complete the rack space. Then add a 1U effects processor.
Members Allerian
Good thoughts. There is no midi in this setup and no need to hook to a computer.
Members Allerian
I'm holding you all responsible if I end up crafting this setup with Behringer hardware.

Members Sinner6
I hear nothing but good about Allen and Heath, but they are not exactly the cheapest option.
Members XorAxAx
Rane 1U analog rack mixer? Is there anything by dbx that would mix for you? Friends don't let friends buy Behringer...

Members J3RK
I don't have any personal experience with these, but they look like they would suit your setup: http://rolls.com/rollsproducts/ They seem to get pretty decent user reviews on some of the online stores like Zzounds, etc. It seems like a lot more companies used to make small rackmount line mixers than they do now. Edit: I do have some experience with these (was just having trouble finding one to link.) http://www.sweetwater.com/store/closeup/LX308B--Main I like these. A friend of mine has one. It's old, extremely beat up, and it still sounds and functions perfectly, so i know they're reliable. No FX sends/returns on this particular model though. Not sure how many other models they have. Allerian - I have two rackmount mixers I had tried for my keys rig at different points along the way in the course of my musical life... but I'm not using right now - both work perfectly. They are: Samson PL1602 (2U rack spaces) http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=63&brandID=2 Rolls RM203x (1U rack spaces) http://rolls.com/rollsproducts/ PM me - I can send pics, maybe we can work out a deal on one of 'em. Members eminor9
Samson PL mixers are nice budget mixers indeed. Flexible routings for effects etc. In fact I just upgraded from PL1602 to 2404 but am keeping the PL1602 as synth-submixer for MnM and MD exclusively. Snatched it from Ebay last week since they're out of production for more than one year already
