Members orangefunk
Sorry for the OT. back in 1998 or so I used to use a program that allowed me to construct a 3D model from a photograph. You basically took any photograph then created boxes around buildings, then you were able to do a fly through your model and create an AVI. Anyone remember the name of this software.. I seem to remember it began Can... or something like that....
Members Allerian
Sketchup does a pretty magical job of that.
Members orangefunk
Hi, What I'm talking about is a bit different. What the software I used did was take a photographic image E.g. (something I found on google) And then the software provided standard isometric shapes (e.g. a house) that you could draw over the photo. Then the image was mapped to this shape and it was like as if you could now naviagate around the image (the same image could be mapped to the back automatically IIRC). You could also make fly thru movies... where you could zoom in and out and travel around buildings...
Members Allerian
Yup, I understand that. Here's a video demo - select "model from a photo". We use this at work once in a while to visualize site work. Keep in mind that the video is a simplistic example. http://download.sketchup.com/downloads/training/tutorials50/Sketchup%20Video%20Tutorials.html
Members orangefunk
Thanks Allerian! Thats more or less exactly what I wanted... I wonder what that other software I had back in 1998 or so was called... the other software was not as comprehensive but specialised in just the photo mapping to 3d shapes.. I'll check out this sketch software all the same... it looks killer... Peace O
Members orangefunk
Hmm.. I pretty sure the software was Carrara http://www.eovia.com/ although , looking at the site the software seems to have evolved into something quite extensive which goes beyond mere photo/texture mapping... Members Allerian
The best thing about Sketchup is the eight hours of design time in the demo - only one of which you'll spend learning the program. Glad to help.
Members Jaydubz
The program was called Camona: http://canoma.com/

Glad to help. The even better thing about Sketchup is that there's an entirely free (as in beer) version: http://sketchup.google.com/
