EMU Roms - my newest stupidity

Okay, so I got my MP-7 Frankensteined to working condition and loaded up a Composer ROM (it has the Mo' Phatt).

I hooked it up to my Virus and an SP404 sampler.

Heavenly.

But I do agree, the piano's are suktastic, even for my generally do-give-a-flyin'-doo-doo approach to sound quality.

In the interests of feeding my new found money pit and to keep up with Scenicsquare's message count (a vaguely frightening proposition which I will hopefully grow out of by the end of lunch time), I ask you:

Are the Sounds of the ZR76 Croakley pianos all that? More importantly, are they better/worse/comparable to a Kurzweil Micro Piano?

Laters,

Tommy

I have a few demos of the ZR here:

ZR_Piano

ZR_Piano2

ZR_Organs

Two piano demos and another one that is mostly organs and a couple of misc other patches. The recordings are kind of crappy, turn the volume up. They were recorded straight from the keyboard into my computer.

I didn't like the ZR rom at first, but then I started using it a lot for some reason. It always seemed to wind up somewhere in the mix. I actually liked the ZR rom better than the pop rom. IMHO, they should have combined the pop rom with the ZR rom, and made one decent bread/butter soundset. The pop rom has a bunch of sound effects and weird sounding stuff but I never was satisfied with the bread/butter sounds on it.

Aeon:

I've thought about the Vintage Pro as well. I'm not so particular about organs and electric p's as to justify it but I have this odd fixation on clavinet sounds.

I keep hearing that the Protean Drums is E-Mu's most desirable ROM. Is it because of the selection of drums or are the raw samples just that much better than the others?

Tommy

I like it for the additional synth colors.

One of two or three, anyway.

It is just a world-class production on that ROM. Great variety for many styles, stellar production values and recording quality, one of the few, if only, sources of ROM multi-layer samples for velocity response in hardware.

In terms of quality drums, it blows the other E-mu ROMs away. Honorable mention goes to the VintagePro ROM, which has some ProteanDrums samples, and if you need endless 808/909 flavors, the TSCY might satisfy.

cheers,

Ian

Protean Drums is superior because they are recorded with many velocity levels, and with consistent room acoustics and mic placement.

However keep in mind that the samples are almost exclusively acoustic, and very rock oriented. Very little percussion beyond the standard rock kit.

Aeon and Rpieket:

Thank you both. But I am somewhat resentful of your responses. While Tony merely talked me out of being a fool with my money, you two talked me out of one ROM and got me interested in two, more expensive, ROMs.

Damn you and your honey lips!!!

the World ROM (found on the Planet Earth module) is great as well. the ethnic percussion samples sound VERY organic and quite delicious. not too much to offer in the way of wind instruments,...but the drums are excellent. highly recommended. cheers.

I got a chance to listen to your demos when it wasn't too obvious...

Thank you, they are very nice sounding. I'm certainly not going to make any piano sound like yours!

I agree that most of the bread and butter sounds of the Pop/Composer ROM (I believe they differ mainly in presets, not raw wave forms) leave a little to be desired. But I find the drums and bass sounds to be useable, especially when paired with the drum and bass sounds found in the MoPhatt ROM already in the MP-7.

I'll catch the ire of most everyone here, but I just am not an organ guy so I really don't have an issue with them. That and my current skill level make any organ/ep sound like a warped carny soundtrack.

The sound quality of your piano pieces was definitely good enough for me. I'm wondering, however, are they so much better than the Pop ROM piano's in your view as to justify the hunt for a ZR rom or is it really just a smaller matter of degree?

Thanks again,

Tommy

Hmmm.....

If you use piano a lot, and don't have another decent piano sound, I would say get the ZR. If you don't use piano a lot, then you might like one of the other roms better.

I have the Protean drums, XL, and ZR roms.

The Protean Drums is by far a standout in terms of quality and useability.

The XL rom makes a great companion to this as it has many descent synth waveforms.

The ZR rom is not in the same league, but the piano is passable, especially after using the "patch" on William Coakleys website.

There are a few other useful presets in the form of some "transwaves" lifted from the fizmo. Nothing terribly compelling.
