Maybe it's a good idea to have the offtopic poll again to see what the rest of the forum thinks of it, albeit that I'm rather afraid that I can predict the outcome. Care to start it? Members Mook
In the UK there are plenty of useful websites such as http://www.spatial-literacy.org/ Try a google on surnames, genes and genealogy. Again, there are plenty available for the UK so there are probably too for your neck of the woods!

But that's not always reliable because of conditions like colonization (i.e. indigenous people in Central/South America given Spanish surnames), assimilation (i,e, Italian immigrants removing the last letter of their surname to sound less "ethnic") and other factors. I also remember hearing some German-Americans with the surname "Hitler" modified or changed their names in the early 20th century for obvious reasons. My surname is Spanish in origin but I know for a fact my ancestors are from the Philippines, China and to a lesser extent, Indonesia and India. So did the UK monarchy (albeit their surname wasn't originally Hitler) - they just happened to change it to the name of castle they live in...
