Hey guys and gals,

about 7 weeks ago I posted about how I quit my high-profile excellent cash money investment banking job and started as an instruments salesman at a new local music shop. Well, I've been there three weeks now. The first week we spent setting everything up, taking all the gear in, unloading that {censored}, price-tagging it, learning how to utilise the cash register etc etc...

So, the store has been open for 2 weeks, and I'm loving every second of it. I took a 70% cut in salary, but what did I gain:

- I wake up every morning HAPPY to go to work! (Who'dve thunk it?)

- I'm proud of my job (I wasn't proud about walking around in pinstripes and being a corporate bitch!)

- I get to interact with normal, every day people (instead of kissing CFO/Vice President arse 'til kingdom come)

- I'm surrounded by objects of my passion (i.e basses, drums, synths...instead of freaking mergers, acquisitions, IPO's and stock options)

- I get to be who I am

- I don't have to stare at a monitor and endless Excel-worksheets all day

I'm so happy, relieved, rejuvinated and pretty much god damn rehabilitated right here up in this bitch! All you corporate wankers and wannabees and Executive Management Team mfgs', here, take my Alabama Black Snake and stuff it down yer stiff throats! {censored}in' result!!!

:) :)

As a piece of advice to all/any of you office rats out there, get the {censored} out while you can, you WILL NOT regret it!

Peace

hey man, I remember that original thread. Good to know you are doing well and liking your current situation. Money isn't everything... and prestige counts for next to nothing in my book. You gotta be happy with yourself and you seem to be 100% on target. I didn't know investment bankers did excel sheets btw... I figured it was watching markets and ploughing through statistics but I guess it all boils down to the same boring stuff. Congrats.

Where do you think statistics reside in? That's right, mufuggin' Excel!! You're partially correct though, the old fat cats (VP's, Senior Advisors) don't do Excel. All they do is play golf, get loaded and spew BS on an hourly basis! Us under 30's analysts, project managers etc. do all the {censored}-diving and ass-munching which boils down to Excel sheets, Power Point presentations, annual {censored}ing reports and long bitch-ass hours. Not to mention clients who call you on Sunday at 10 pm to discuss some cracker jack proposals and resolutions for their Board meeting on monday morning. That {censored} is outta the park for me man!

Aaaaah, bliss, pure bliss....

PS: I know there's peeps out there who really DO enjoy Corporate Finance, Investment Banking etc. and more power to them, but I wasn't one of those peeps and am so very happy to do something that I'm finally content with.

Finished HS in '96, had no clue what I wanted to do so decided to study Business Administration in the UK. Thought 'twas a good, general degree. Finished my degree in '99, did my compulsory stint in the Finnish armed forces and had to find a job. Found a job in investment banking. Started as project assistant, moved up to Project Manager. Annual salary was 50-60k (which is A LOT for a young dude in this part of the world) The only reason I stayed as long as I did (6+ years) was the pay. Now I have a nice home studio with decent gear. Now I don't need the money anymore. Now I sell instruments for 10 euros (+ commission) an hour. Now I'm happy!

Major congrats!

I took a 50% pay cut when switching from 5-star food service to music retail, and it was like a huge weight had lifted off my shoulders.

And what's weird is that at the time, I was spending so much money on gear, the brand new employee accommodation meant I still came out ahead.

Oh, how I miss the GAS days.

Really???

I love options... I find them to be sexy. And don't even get me started on futures.

- I get to be who I am

Of course, this is the most important thing of all.

It takes a big nutsack to do what you did. Congrats and enjoy the result! :thu:

I don't need the money anymore.

Hmmm...... you don't now.

Dunno, wouldn't take that kind of pay cut personally. I like being able to do whatever I want when I'm not at work and never worrying about $$ and knowing I will retire with enough. Besides 50-60k doesn't go very far when you have a wife and kids, I'm not sure how someone could live off of that.

Hope it goes well.
