I see the are alot of controllers now getting to the market. Though, all seems to be close but not really make it to what I really want. What is your take on this?

What I would want is:

As a controller for synth sounds etc:

===========================

* 61 keys. "Great" synth action.

* Polyphonic aftertouch.

* Weight - max 3 kg/6.5 pounds.

* Approx 16-24 buttons to send program change. (E.g. 8 keys for bank change and 8-16 for program change)

* Input for sustain pedal and expression/volume pedal.

* Modulation and pitch bend wheel/joystick. (Preferably wheel).

* The "frame" of the keyboard should be as small as possible.

* USB. Maybe also MIDI connector but not needed.

Price: Max $500-600.

As a controller for piano etc:

======================

* 88 keys. "Great" weighted action.

* Polyphonic aftertouch.

* Weight - max 9 kg/20 pounds.

* At least 16-24 buttons to send program change. (E.g. 8 keys for bank change and 8-16 for program change or similar)

* At least small LED for patch/sound names, split setup. (e.g. 4rows*16columns)

* Input for sustain pedal and expression/volume pedal.

* Modulation and pitch bend wheel/joystick. (Preferably wheel).

* The "frame" of the keyboard should be as small as possible.

* USB. Maybe also MIDI connector but not needed.

Price: Max $800-1000.

I would be nice if we could custom order our gear as we wanted it, but part of the fun (or really frustration) is tracking down something that fits your requirements as closely as possible.

I've faced the same problem with finding a controller that exactly fits my needs (which are different than yours), and I've had the same problem with almost every other piece of gear, with studio furniture being #1 on my list.

Good luck :thu:

What a shame that you don't know what you want. ;) I can't speak about synth-style controllers, but I have a Yamaha KX-88 weighted controller, which I think meets practically all of your requirements:

- 88 keys? Check. Great weighted action? Check.

- It's got poly note-on. Oh wait, poly-aftertouch? uh, no, it doesn't have that.

- It weighs less than 20-- uh... well, no, it ways 5 tons.

- It's got 32 buttons for patch change... hm, that's too many, I guess.

- It's got a full-color 19" LCD displ-- uh... no, it's got a few blinkenlights.

- Sustain and and volumn pedal input? Check, baby!

- Mod and Pitch wheels? Check!

- The frame is as small as-- well... it's it's smaller than my house, does that count?

- USB. Hell no. Real men don't use USB.

So there you go. Perfect match. I'll even sell you mine for the low, low price of (*looks up price of a Virus TI*) uh, only $2299, plus shipping and handling! But wait, don't order yet! I'll even through in an old Korg Poly EX-800 module, complete with original electron-free backup battery!
