Members Tusks
I am in a "what kind of music do you like" dialog with some fellow band members. We've discussed stuff like great bass solos, examples of intricate arrangements, some favorite horn and guitar solos, etc. We've talked about everyone from John Patitucci (bass) to Hendrix (guitar) to Michael Brecker (sax/EWI), etc. These guys are mostly from a rock/jazz background. So I thought of putting together a set of songs that feature synthesizers as lead instruments. I have a few tunes I could go to, but I am curious what you would mention. George Duke and Zawinul strike as extremely melodic but I can't think of single appropriate solo by them at the moment. Thanks for your advice, Jerry
Members Yoozer
Chick Corea's Mad Hatter album. Stevie Wonder - Living for the city? Herbie's Chameleon, naturally . Jeff Beck's Wired album
Members Diametro
If you're feeling more mellow ... perhaps "Blade Runner Blues" from the soundtrack ... It's got that incredible lead and I love the playing ...
Members Tusks
Thanks for your replies guys. Diametro, good call on Blade Runner Blues. Mellow is fine. Yoozer, yeah "Living for the City", is perfect. A synth novice would 'get it'. Any particular tracks off Mad Hatter and Wired? Keep it coming ... Members syncretism
"Progressing Through Time", by Aural Research Facilities. I don't know if it was sequenced, or what, but it's hell-rad. Sadly, when I heard from him last, he said he'd abandoned all of his synths, save for his "Deathlehem Modular", for Reason. Members Tusks
I didn't know Superstition had synths in it. Nice clav parts though. I'll check out the Zappa track. He seemed to bring the best out of his players. I googled ARF in several ways. He seems to have shut down his home page and music page. No luck. Judging from the title would it be conceptually similar to Pink Floyd's "On the Run" (i.e. program music on a synthesizer)? Jerry
Members lasselu
You are, I am - Manfred Mann's Earth bandGreat Minimoog solo...
Members orangefunk
You mentioned George Duke, my fav solos by him are Festival (from one of his late 70s LPs) and Brazilian Sugar (from Brazilian Love Affair)...
Members kayvon
First one that comes to my mind is Herbie's Clavitar solo on And the melody still lingers on by Chaka Khan. Moog bass is great in there as well.
Members Yoozer
Any particular tracks off Mad Hatter and Wired? From Wired: "Play with me" lets what I suspect is a Mini do a duel with a lead guitar - it would show nicely how keyboards can act as a compliment and a solo instrument. Also, the intro is a Clav. From Mad Hatter: "The Mad Hatter Rhapsody" would be nice but it's also pretty much of a 10-minute wankfest in terms of solos .
Members rpieket
So many to choose from... Do you know the 70's/80's albums by Synergy/Larry Fast? If I had to pick one album, try "Cords" from 1978. If I had to pick a track, "Phobos and Deimos Go To Mars". Features a great guitar synth, too. -Ron. Members Tusks
Good idea. It's quite hard to find Larry's stuff these days. I am looking on Ebay at the moment. 10 minutes? Sounds good to me ... but I'll pick it up for myself. This is great. Nice to see the mix of styles, guys. Keep it coming. Jerry
Members Tusks
BTW, any particular standout tracks from Tomita? I love Daphnis and Chloe, but they are pretty long tracks IIRC. Thanks, Jerry

I also like Alpha from Vangelis (on the album Albedo 0.39 and Carl Sagan's Cosmos series). That's good information for me. I've always wanted to pick up the planets. I guess that's a recommendation. Thanks. I'll look into Alpha. I've always felt that Vangelis (if anyone) had command of the orchestral potential of the synth and decent orchestral writing.
