That's how they use the Nord G2 in France

Thanks, this is my kind of music too, do you guys have any artists to suggest? The only band/artist that I know of who uses electronic sounds within a traditional Jazz trio setup is Hiromi. More is definitely welcomed.

Scott Kinsey uses a nord lead, and sometimes plays some "outside" textures.

He's part of the band Tribal Tech ...

Medeski Martin and Wood also do some outside textures sometimes. Medeski uses a ring modulator and distortion effects (rather than a synth) for these.

I'd like to see more of these kinds of music myself.

it`s not real phrase looping - he`s making use of the sequencermodules that play the drummodules

But weren't we hearing bass lines played back? And not sequenced parts, but parts he had just played, sync'd with the beat, so it wasn't just delay.

You CAN do phrase looping -- with the Delay modules, etc.

Scroll through the thread for the development of this idea.

Here's the 'ultimate' incarnation of this, by 'tim', a power-user from Switzerland.

Thanks for the links - this is simply amazing!

NMG2 among the most underrated hardware synths out there.

Hey anybody understand French, and can explain the explanations? I don't think Babelfish has graduated to voice recognition yet. I thought I heard a ring modulator mentioned with the warble sound but that's it.

Hi guys,

I tried to translate it for you. I do not have a G2, so I'm not sure I understood every name he was using.

Great video anyway, very interesting ;-)

Here is the translation:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the San Severino sound check on the "La Carrriere" stage in Nantes Saint-Herblain. As an intro, listen to his use of the nord G2 vocoder.

Xavier Tribolet, his drummer and keyboarder, has accepted to introduce us to all the resources of his Nord G2.

-There is a sound I had been dreamiing of for a long time, but I hadn't found the machine to do it.. That's easy because it's modular, Two keys on the left are used to repeat those played on the right. For example if I play G, it will play the same G.If I play A, it does the same. That's done by pressing the C sharp and the C...same thing with this one.

-The three notes are modulated by the pedal. ..Same thing here...That's a ring modulator. That's a filter and here in the other direction the same filter, so for example...

-I use the bender (pitch stick) here with rather big ranges like 5 octaves...that way I can play...The wheel here does the normal pitch wheel...

-There are possibilities to have very different sounds using the same effect. That can be used to do many things...That's sync, but the oscillators, with a pinch on the wheel, are all detuned in a different way. So you can hear the sync very loud, that's something you cannot do on an analog synth. You can do morphing as a matter of fact. But not only that. The three oscillators are going down in a different way, and at the same time they can be edited... ... ...

-When we play "La grand mere" I start a loop, that's a machine drum loop with a tap tempo. There is no tap tempo on the G2 but there are modules to do it. It's enough to put 2 modules, I use the "zero counts" module, and in two hits you have a tap tempo. On the first hit, it records the starting point, the second hit gives both time and the start of the drum machine. To stop it, i programmed it so I would just have to hit the same key again. That's it.

Very nice -- thanks for that!

@ Tusks: Thanks for the suggestions. I already know MMMW & Tribal Tech (of course, Scott Henderson is one of my idols actually). I'll check the solo stuff of Kinsey. I have an album of him playing outside of TT, it's called "Uncle Moe's Space Ranch".

@ vwizz: Thanks a lot for the translation. You guys in France are so indulged with quality Jazz music, I envy you . There is this tv channel, called Mezzo (spelling?) which from what I hear is quite interesting for Jazz & Classical music addicts. They air complete live gigs for both famous and underground bands, documentaries, world music, you name it. I sent them an e-mail once and they said that the channel is not available in the US :cry:.

It's not just for Jazz and Classical, it's got world music, you know, ethnic based works, some opera, and i believe on occasion even ballet :freak:
