Members willi
The Billy Joel song All for Leyna, does that start with a Yamaha CP or something? The piano has a bit of a different tone. And can anyone name the song it reminds me of -- I want to say it's by Blondie or Supertramp or something but I have not been able to recall the name of it. But the rhythm and chords are similar. Which came first?
Members gilwe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J69i524n1x8 CP70. And a very nice OBX action ! Maybe it reminds you of Joel's "Moving Out"...
Members willi
lol, nice bug eyes, Billy! Thanks for the link gilwe. Do you know, is that sound using the built in CP70 tremelo? Kind of interesting I could recognize the CP sound, though a bit dismaying in some ways as it's a bit thin. I'm planning to put a deposit on a CP70 tomorrow! The guy wants $1500.. though I'm hoping to negotiate it down at least a few hundred dollars... I think the song it reminds me of might have a female singer. Dunno, maybe it was by Journey? I'm sure it's not another Billy Joel song, though. And the song it reminds me of uses an electric piano, I think a Wurlitzer. But it has a similar driving rhythm and similar chord structure if I recall correctly. Also, OBX is pretty big!
Members gilwe
With a CP70 you can't go wrong ! It's the most beutiful sounding electric piano to my taste. But bring over a piano tech to check it out for you, this is in all means a piano, and may have some problems that only a tech will be able to nail down. As for the tremolo, well... do you hear a tremolo ? if so, than I assume its the CP70's one Youtube quality is too bad for trying to figure that out... And.... yes, the OBX is quite a bit synth. Bigger than the JP8 and Trident !
Members MarkF786
Thanks for the link! I was a big Billy Joel fan in grade school and used to love that song. I never saw the video until now.
Members Nik
The piano intro reminds me of Abba's Money Money Money. The guitar skank in the verse is very Police.
Members wades_keys
Check out Billy ripping some arpeggios on the OBX at about 3:11 to 3:14. Billy goes prog?
Members willi
I think it also reminds me of "Hold the Line" by Toto.
Members willi
Aha! I know which artist I was trying to recall above -- Pat Benetar. I don't know if it's actually one of her songs that I was being reminded of, but that is the artist that I couldn't recall anyway. Any other good CP70 vids? I know there is another Billy Joel song with CP70 on the album, as I recognized the tone on the radio the other day.. however I forgot which song it was, and I don't seem to find another obvious CP70-based tune in my collection of Billy Joel records... Members suitandtieguy
i lost interest when he stopped using a Hammond with a fuzz, wah, and echoplex, and stopped playing bass on a Rheem bass synth. so i'm afraid i can't help you with this. Members willi
This take of Georgy Porgy features a CP70 as well. In fact there are a couple of Toto videos that utilize the CP70. Who else used the CP70? I believe George Duke is cited as one of it's users, but I haven't found any videos of him playing it, etc. What about Elton John? Try My Life... starts around 1.20http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-3enjfQyuE Yup, I think there are a few others on various Billy Joel albulms as well. It seems like the CP70 is well suited to (or almost outright favors) heavily rhythmic songs.

Members jrlaudio
Just so you know ... Billy used the CP-70 and a Mutron phaser on that track. There also was little slap-back delay on it as well. Got that from the horses mouth so to speak. John LeVasseurLong Island, NY
Members jemgel
Check out Keane as they use a CP70 a ton if you like the tone.My Roland RD700SX has a pretty good fake of it...what's old is new again!Billy Joel was in the latest issue of Keyboard....he came off like a pretty nice guy... Members MickeyKeys
I don't think "My Life" features a CP70. I'm pretty sure he used it on "I Don't Want To Be Alone" and "Sleeping With the Television On" from Glass Houses also. However, Billy made good use of the CP70 (or maybe the 80?) on the Nylon Curtain album; it really sticks out on "Pressure", "A Room of Our Own" (cool CP solo on that one), and "Surprises". An earlier poster asked if Elton John had used a CP on anything... the only thing I can remember which I'm fairly certain featured a CP was "Empty Garder/Hey Hey Johnny".
