Closest Analog to a Waldorf Q (sonically) is...

My answer is % 60 Roland JX10/MKS70 and % 40 Oberheim Matrix 6. My Q Rack hasn't seen so much use for some time and after getting my WavaStation A/D I attempted to see how these two compare. With my fresh ears I found something Roland and Oberheim in this yellow devil. The funny thing is that I haven't digged it seriously so far but I changed my mind  This synth is in a league of its own. Enjoy your Q !

I accept that analog emulation is not its strongest point, but without much cut off it sounds analog to me. It is possibly not intended to emulate a certain brand. Still meaty and organic pads remind me these two guys that I mentioned. I made some decent Juno-106 sounds easily. I mean it sounds really close. Add to that the above average Moog leads and basses. Wave sweeps are more competent though.

I've always found that comparison an insult when it comes to Waldorf.

The make truly unique digital synthesizers that should stand on there own as pure digital synthesis machines in a class few other's can attain.

I would put the Wavestation AD, Kawai K5000S , Yamaha SY99 and there short lived FDSP synths and the FS1R, Waldorf Q/Xt hell even the MicroQ and Microwave in that lot. Also Roland'd D50, JD990/800 the Kurzweil K2000 and up along with the Emu Morpheus and Ultraproteus also.

None of them should be compared to analog synths.

All of them are truly superb digital synths in their own right none the less and should be viewed as such IMHO.

Nuttin' wrong with a great digital synth irrespective of how much the "we love analog synths" worship I see here or anywhere else on music forums that I frequent.

Hell a Casio CZ5000 and some great outboard is one hell of a useful synth even today for example and then some.

I :love:my digital synths.

Always have done to be honest.

You just gotta know which ones are worth more love than others .

Just got a Q+, and it combines the Q's defiantly un-analog sound, with analog filters - which you can combine with the digital filters...so you can get it to sound more analog if you want. But sometimes the digital filters just sound better....but in any case - I think that the question about what analog synth sounds like the Q is to some degree relative to how immersed in the Waldorf sound you are. To me, Waldorf synths have a distinctive sound - so NO other synths sound like them, analog or digital. but to someone who isn't a synth nut, my Q+ would probably sound very much like a Virus. On the other hand, would it be cheating to say that a Pulse sounds a little like the Q?

Let me correct one thing: I have no claim about Q sounding exactly analog or very close to MKS70. I just haven't played it for a long time and the first thing that came to mind while playing it is the meaty digital sound that resembles MKS70 and Matrix 6. I think I am not exagerating when saying this, because it can do analog sounds as good as many VAs. It is not perfect emulation of course, and is much more beyond that. Patches that directly reference to these analogs sound good to me. Maybe it is just me, of course.:)
