hello

i'm looking for some analog synth with VCO and MIDI for some aggressive, overdriven, fat industrial basses. preferably a module, but might be with keys also. price range is something about 1500$, maybe a bit more.

any ideas?

cheers

Bassstation Rack (the original)

btw.. what is this "fat industrial bass"?

well... :p maybe that's not the best description. i dunno how to express what i mean. i'm looking for those very fat bass sounds commonly found on heavey industrial songs. NIN is not the best example, but there are such sounds also. BIG, HEAVY, DISTORTED, SCARRRY.

The Evolver is nice, but doesn't it have DCO? i definitely want something with VCO.

mine is finally in transit ...

I've read it doesn't have THE most thunderous bass, but "it'll do in a pinch." I'm looking forward to its unison mode. 12 voltage controlled oscillators selectably detuned can't be that much teh suck.

Still, I've never really cared for unison mode on any of my synths. To me it just sounds sloppy.

This one, however, is supposed to be one of the best, I've read.

(note: that knob along the lefthand facing side of the Jupe is a user mod for selecting another bank of patches ... Most don't have that ... but the Europa mod

Any of the yamaha CS or roland Sh series... but most dont have midi .. you can allways get a kit though.

alot of your sound though is going to come from patch programming an effects processing. having a good synth is only part of the problem :)

$1500 is a lot of money to buy old crappy industrial gear. When I think about going back to my roots and having a skinny puppy cover band, I ponder getting..

korg poly800

ensosniq esq1

ensonic eps16

yamaha tx802 or matrix6r or roland mks something or akai ax60...

a midiverb

Axlegrinder + fake blood.

that , a few microphones, 5 string guitar and 12 channel mixer would be way less than $1500, and with some patience.. (because back then we had more patience than money) you could be making something that sounds like 90% of the EBM industrial music from 82-96.

Or, you could go all moneybags and get an obie xpander

The Evolver will get you that sound.

My suggestion is, don't get hung up on VCO instead of DCO.

Hell, even digital can go there. The Quasimidi Polymorph is one of the best sounding synths for industrial, I think.

But if you must have VCO, I suggest a Sequential Pro-One (Skinny Puppy used it heavily on their early stuff). Also, the Octave CAT is the rudest sounding synth I've ever owned. With a budget of $1500, you could fit a Sherman Filterbank in there too. Or the new Future Retro XS is another good option.

does it have to be analog?

waldorf XT is awesome for authentic NIN grit.

+1. The Q is a great piece of gear as well, but seriously, any person making harsh industrial basslines should listen to eskimodenver, you certainly don't need to go and spend a crapload of money on something for the sound. Buy yourself a good hybrid module with real filters and some effects units and experiment.

There are so many great niche synths out there that are overlooked. I am seriously looking at a SCI Prophet 600 or MultiTrack. A friend of mine has both (as well as a VS I have been trying to buy off him for years), and they can come up with some really pounding basslines when put through some distortion.

Too expensive and you need a midi to cv converter but the minimoog pwns everything. And I mean everything. Click below and you can hear mine pumping like a freak. There is nothing even close for a bass line. Nothing.

So, if you want to be truly satisfied, there is only one. Highlander... umm I mean minimoog.

Sadly its too expensive and needs midi to cv which is somewhat of a pain in the ass with such an unstable instrument. I would see what more affordable moog offerings there are.

Don't blow my secret ;) I thought I was the only one that thought that, even I think it does a bit of everything well.

Again:

Modular - In your face bass, could be a little too precise sounding, but I think you want snappy and there are plenty of mix and match options here to nail your sound down. I think Cwejman, Plan B, Doepfer and Livewire would fit the bill. Although after hearing some Modcan, I'm seriously interested in it - sounds extremely raw and an easy choice for industrial.

Moog - If you want that sound, you can't go wrong.

Future Retro XS - I'm loving it and exploring it still. It's all there though: drums, basses, leads, fx. Yum.

SE ATC-X(i) - One of the best modern synths IMHO, very versatile with 4 filters. Might not be as snappy as the above but very good.

Evolver - is quite an industrial sounding synth. In fact that was the first thing I think when I use it.

You're limiting yourself with wanting JUST VCOs. As everyone has been stating, the Evolver is a killer synth and does rather evil Industrial sounds really well. It's one of my favorite synths! Trent is a big Waldorf fan. So if you're looking for his type of bass sounds, look there. But he uses a lot of processing.
