Choose from four acoustic piano sounds

Using the same MIDI file, I recorded four different acoustic pianos using various parts of my hardware/software instrument collection. Which one do you like best? Like the least? Are they all horrible? Your opinion welcome!

Piano #1

Piano #2

Piano #3

Piano #4

These are 320-bit MP3s, converted from AIF files recorded using Digital Performer.

Nice playing. That kind of reminds me of the Hill Street Blues theme song.

I don't like 2 or 4. Too harsh and bright, with minimal dynamic response. 1 and 3 are fairly similar, with 3 sounding more muted than 1. I'd probably pick #1.

To me, #1 sounds the most "well rounded" and natural - but I don't think it would cut through as well in a live mix. #3 sounds like you recorded it off an AM radio and #4 sounds like it's phase shifting.

Since I actually prefer the brighter tone of the Yamaha/Kawai over the Steinway/Baldwin (I own a Baldwin M), I would have to pick #2 as my favorite - and I'll go out on a limb and guess that #2 is the Motif.

1 is okay, but nothing impressive. Kinda bright and loud sounding...but not as bad as 2.

2 is horrible. Way too bright and loud, almost like there are no dynamics. Sounds WAY too machine-like.

3 is...good. Nice and smooth sounding, compared to the previous 2.

4.....what the hell? Is there some kind of weird panning thing going on? As far as timbre goes, it's too bright and nasally sounding. Actually, this is the worst piano sound I've ever heard, haha!

Go with 3, man!

Caveat - listening on pc speakers

#1 - Nice natural quality to it, however Im hearing some nasty high frequency ringing that would probably drive me nuts fixing it in a mix - piano modeller or software? Maybe an overcooked sypathetic resonance simulation?

#2 - Not enough sustain in it, otherwise reaonably clean sounds. A bit liveless - ok for banging out rock/house piano riffs - yamaha rompler?

#3 - A bit in-yr-face - Good for use in a band for a bit of cut-through along side a guitarist etc. Sustain seem nice. Another modeller/software piano?

#4 - Could allmost be 3 with the EQ curve reversed. Dont like the way its EQd, but has nice overall ambience. Roland?

I would like 1 the most, but the ringing kills it. In the end - Not hugely happy with any of them. The search goes on....

Nice playing though :) that your work?

You kind of ranked them the way they should be ranked. Number is the best. It's the closest to the real thing. I know the piece is made that way but I wish you had striken a few lower notes so that one can hear the sound quality of those [you went almost all the way to the right, but not enough to the far left].

If I had that kind of piano sound, I would only compose piano-based music and never touch my SY77 again. I think that that's where real musicans shine and where the real music comes to life, like in your piece.

Very nice.

[Note: I did not read any of the comments before posting mine].
