Members Jonathanlimusic
Hey guys, I'm a singer/songwriter who plays guitar but is looking into starting to play the piano. What i need is a realistic sounding keyboard but at the same time i would like a workstation because i want to try my hand at arranging and stuff with it (more so like a professional songwriter would). I would want a piano whose keys are weighted and also gig worthy. Also i basically want a keyboard that i would not have to replace or it would be many years before i would want to upgrade. From my research these pianos look good but i don't know enough about them or whether they are still being sold: Yamaha M06 Korg TR61 or 76 Yamaha PR200 or 250 Any others you would reccomend? Thanks! Jon (also if you want to hear what my music sounds like to get an idea of what i am looking for www.jonathanlimusic.com --> it's quite mainstream but i am hoping to add some more synth and possibly move into a more "indie" direction as well)
Members rovito
The units you have listed all have synth / non weighted key beds. Try these.Yamaha MO8Yamaha Motif 8 ES/XSKorg Triton 88Korg TR88Roland Fantom X8Alesis Fusion 8HDKurzweilYou will be hard pressed to find anything smaller with a weighted key bed. Members nitekattz2007
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned the Casio PX-200, but it is a real nice weighted 88 keyboard with 128 polyphony. It is probably a lot cheaper than the name brands, but it has MIDI IN/OUT and I have it attached to my MacBook with a Tascam FireOne interface and using various soft synth programs. I really like the feel and the acoustic piano samples. You may check that one out katt

Members Aanalogaddict
PC3 - nice, but expensive. Yes. A great tool, but perhaps not perfect for a piano beginner. The PC3x is a killer synth, but it sounds like you may need a digital piano. The Yamaha MO8 sounds like an appropriate synth for your needs. Members Jonathanlimusic
Okay, so the PC3 is definitley out of my price range, i was hoping for something between $1000 - $1700. Would any of the lower model Kurzweil's be good? I am also interested in the Yamaha MO8 but what's the difference between it and the motif? Members Jonathanlimusic
Also how important is it to have weighted key beds as a beginner?
Members Jonathanlimusic
I am also most interested in having a very realistic piano sound... that's what i was interested in the Yamaha P200 - 250's cause i heard they had very realistic piano sounds. Members augerinn
The Yamaha P series are also going to have very realistic feel. Yamaha uses the graded hammer effect keys which feels just like a real piano. Remember, that they are first and foremost a piano, albeit a digital one. And, as nitekatzz pointed out, if you just want a digital piano on the cheap, the Casio privias are actually pretty nice.
Members rovito
Given your price range and needs combined you may want to take a good look at the Alesis Fusion 8HD. They are selling new for around $1000.
