Members drxcm
Definitely not, you should sell me your pristine 909 Personally I would keep 'em until the end...

Members cl516
Hmm, this is really weird. Last time I checked Ebay, there were barely any units, and prices were just absolutely offensive. As for selling one and keeping the other, everybody says something different. Whether I use them or not : I DO when I make certain types of music obviously. The question is whether I want to continue in that style or not... Anyway, this is not a spam thread from me. It's more just an opinion thing.
Members Don Solaris
Yo Don, I was here first buddy. No you were not. You asked him one rude (sexual related) question. HOW DARE YOU! I asked him about 808.
Members Diametro
Perhaps I'm exposing myself as a Philistine, but I spent some time with both recently, and though it wasn't long enough or under very good monitoring conditions, I came away from it with that Peggy Lee "Is That All There Is?" feeling. While I suppose its still the best way to get THAT sound, I'd much prefer something like a Linn Drum II or something modern with more features ... That said, if I were in possession of them and didn't need to sell them, I'd hang on ... Prices will probably never fall on these living, working pieces of music history ... unless there's something you specifically want or need ... The good thing is they don't take up much space ... Members raffor
I bought myself a drumstation and an ER-1 and haven't missed my 808 & 909 much since. But that is just me. I found the 808 too limiting by having no external program storage. The 909 is great unit but one I let go for my MPC-60 and the other one I sold because of the combination above. But then I sold my JP-8 and haven't looked back!!!

You really need to use both of them together IMHO - 909 for kick and HH, maybe snares, 808 for other noises - and you need a nice compressor and EQ to run them all through - dbx 1066 goes with them really well. Members cl516
i will say this though - i do currently have them, and when i do use them, nothing sounds like them. they've got that extra punch - an earlier jomox i had wasn't similar enough. but the damn prices they're selling for now... it's just tempting to let'em go. Members suitandtieguy
Perhaps I'm exposing myself as a Philistine, but I spent some time with both recently, and though it wasn't long enough or under very good monitoring conditions, I came away from it with that Peggy Lee "Is That All There Is?" feeling. this is pretty funny, because i just spent a week dicking around with an Xbase 999 and a Machinedrum thinking "man i'm totally just going to get a 909" because there were just too many options. i could probably see a TR-909 and a Machinedrum, though. basically when i first plugged a TR-909 into my rig, after using samples for so long, it just sounded so live and vibrant and powerful (my monitors are Mackie SR1530s) that i couldn't imagine going back, and then i had to because the guy who was keeping it here took it back! haha. the limited set of controls over the sound on the 909 is IMHO quite positive, as the sounds are so {censored}ing good. also i dicked with that 999 for a couple days trying to make the kick drum sound like a 909 but all i got were a bunch of cool kick drum sounds that didn't sound like a 909. i don't really lust after an 808 though, because my favourite part of the 808 is the hats and i have those on my CR-8000. Members ChristianRock
While I'd love to have a 909, there's great samples from it out there. Unless you use it a lot, samples might do for you. And as you can see, there are lots of ravenous wolves here ready to attack the moment you say "for sale" How is the midi implementation in these machines? Primitive? Or would they work well with a Machine Drum or some other step sequencer?
Members Paolo Di Nicolantonio
I say keep the 808, keep the 909, AND get a 303 The standard Techno set that separates the men from the boys
Members malfunkt
If you keep them, invest more into them, maybe bring new life to them by getting a killer FX processor...Lexicon, Eventide etc. If you sell, invest into something totally different that will help you with a different style. Members cl516
ha! great funny responses here.no doubt these units are great... it's just that -isn't there a point where prices get too ridiculous not to bite?for me, there are many categories of tools for making music, and perhaps sacrificing options in one category could help improve another group of tools... but looks like i'm keepin' 'em for now. Ive got a girl with great tits and a girl with a great ass but should I dump them and just watch porn?(and of course all the guys watching porn post "can I buy your girlfriends"...) It's more like, you've got a great thing going, but should you dump them to get [insert Celebrity Crush of your Dreams] who's hot AND can advance your career.
