I am completely new to using midi instruments, or any kind of program to get sound from it. I'm using an XP computer and I have FL studio, but I have no idea how to simply use this keyboard to play... I want to learn to play piano, and also use the keyboard to do stuff like drumbeats, etc...

I know about the search function, but I could find anything this basic... sorry.

I'm primarily a guitar player, and I'm decent at recording using normal (to me) means, and I generally use adobe audition 3 for recording.

yes I installed the driver from the m-audio website, and that enigma software that's up there. the computer seems to detect it. In FL studio, I've changed the MIDI settings to match up with any documentation I can find, including several tutorials online. To me, it looks like I set up everything correctly, but I have a feeling that i either have an output selected wrong, or I'm directing the keyboard to the wrong area.

does anyone have an experience with this particular keyboard? If i'm using FL studio, what would I be setting my midi output to to make sure it goes to my PC speakers? what do I need to open to get a synth running off the keyboard. Is there a better alternative to FL studio?

The midi output can never be sent to speakers of any kind. Midi is not audio. Speakers play audio. Midi is music data about which note events are being played, not the actual sound of the notes. Since you want synth sounds, go to Guitar Center and buy the Native Instruments Komplete Synths package. It includes four great softsynths at an excellent price. During the GC labor day sale, they had it for $159.99, so see if you can get a price match to their own sale price. They also have the VI.ONE software for under $100, which has over 21GB of sounds, including pianos and lots of interesting acoustic instruments. GC had VI.ONE on sale for $79.99.

Once you install these softsynths, you should have no problem getting them to recognize the midi input from your keyboard. These two packages are a huge value. The Massive softsynth is well named - since it will take many, many hours just to hear all of the cool sounds it has.

ok... Just because i'm an idiot, and have no idea how to use this (and i'm poor and don't want to spend money) is there a reason I can't use something like FL studio, or even the software it came with? I was under the impression there were built in synths. All I really want is to be able to hear and record the keyboard. I understand the midi itself can't be sent to the speakers.

Sorry, I don't use FruityLoops, so I can't help. Maybe look for an FL forum, since that probably where the problem is with your configuration, not the hardware or the midi drivers.

I just bought the Keystation 88 last week and I use FL Studio 8. It works like a dream. I didn't even need to install the drivers with XP2. I believe the only thing I did to make it work was to select a plugin to trigger in FL studio and under the midi settings menu I selected all the inputs and activated them one at a time using the 'Activate' button. The inputs were all assigned to '(Generic Controller)' by default. That is all I did to make it work!

Edit: And, I have read if you are using a USB hub, you may have some issues getting it to work the first time. This may not apply, but just thought I would mention. I use a hub and haven't had any issues.
