Prophet 5- worth buying?

I have a chance to get a Prophet 5 for $2500 New in box (unsold from the 80s)

Im trying to start a vintage synth collection and this seems like a great addition. Ive heard the prophets can have some issues- like all vintage keyboards- and im guessing even one "new in box" could still have issues like bad/aged chips.

Im not able to find a current price for these. I know there are some listed on ebay for close to $3000 but they dont have any bids, and neither do ones in completed auctions.

What do you guys think?

Each vintage can have troubles. Seems like a good price. But don't get fooled. "Thanks" to this crisis, prices went down for some units. I know a guy who can't sell a fully refurbished and serviced Prophet 5 with MIDI for $2.7k.

So explain the seller about the crisis, and he might drop a little bit.... then take it. ;)

I would power the unit up slowly with a variac to keep from blowing up the old Capacitor's.They dry up over many years and need to form or reform slowly. You may have to replace some caps regardless. At least its true in old Hi Fi/guitar amps etc. JD

Yep.. a 'new in box', never been used synth (or any kind of electronics) needs to be handled carefully at first. Caps are especially likely to go bad faster if they -aren't- used.

The price is good, considering it is an "unused", new old stock synth.

If you wish to have a vintage synth collection no doubt you will have to spend on making them work as expected ;)

Doesn't this just sound too good to be true?

"New" + "Unsold in a box" at a low price like that?

Sorry, if i had a pristine "never out of the box" vintage synth i would try to hawk it at at least three times the going rate.

... and BTW, the JP-8 really is overated :D

.....for goodness sake even dont go there! Im sure Don and Diametro gave me the cold shoulder for a week after my opinion on the JP8

Hey, i am just helping Diametro accquire one at a reasonable price :-D

...with the intent of gathering more members for the "the JP8 is overrated" club. Once you have owned one membership is free :)

As for the P5 - i have never tried one  but am sure that it is all people say it is.

Which apparently is a five voice unreliable analogue monster :D

OT: @Teoman

Did you get a chance to take a photo of the battery + psu area of your Trident?
:thu:

Hi Flat,

Sorry I forgot to take the inner pics due to the absence of a digicam. Thought you somewhat solved your issues though. Will do it ASAP I promise ;) together with my new studio pics for my new website.

@grumphh. Yes I guess I will join your club eventually but lets wait and see...

Don't say that yet, try it first :D

Not that i retract my statement, but the JP8 is really a very good synth and has a sound quality that is absolutely excellent.

Some people might not find it overrated at all, i guess it depends on what you go for in your music.

Personally i just found that the Roland sounds i like are just as nice on other (cheaper) Roland synths and that there is not much more to the JP8 than that.

But in the end it is still a personal thing whether you like a synth a lot or not.
