Members stikygum
The Genre is New Wave This is open to any and everyone that wants to try and make a New Wave tune. (Refer to the House link below for other background info). Objective - Pretty self explanatory: Make and post a New Wave song that you create. New Wave is fairly broad and actually encompasses a lot of music. New Wave was originally coined to describe the British punk rock scene in the late 70s. I tend to like more of the New Wave bands with heavy use of synthesizers. So to be more clear on what kind of music I was thinking about, read this excerpt from Wiki: "Starting in the early 1980s and continuing until around 1988, the term "New Wave" was used in America to describe nearly every new pop or pop rock artist that largely used synthesizers. Examples of artists defined in the United States as New Wave during this period that would not fit the original definition include Duran Duran, Modern Talking, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, Thompson Twins, Tears For Fears, The Human League, Men Without Hats, Thomas Dolby, and Culture Club." You can make any New Wave music you can think of (of course), if you picture new Wave as something different from the above (with or without guitars or whatever you see fit). I won't post any Youtube vids of New Wave since it's so broad and you can Youtube any band you want listed above to find out more. Here's a link I found on New Wave's history. From what I can tell New Wave seems to be split into the Rock/Punk Rock music side and the Pop music with heavy synthesizer useage side. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-new-wave-music.htm For those still want to post a House tune, you can go here: Here's the previous week's Genre for reference: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2221837
Members cram1960
A wildly inclusive and diverse list of "new wave" bands : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_Wave_bands_and_artists Now, is synth-pop a sub genre of new wave? heh
Members stikygum
Yeah, I think that is pretty much a sub genre of New Wave. Could be wrong, but I would think synth pop would fit right in. I thought about doing a Synth-Pop week this week, but was trying to distinguish it and New Wave. I went with New Wave to harken back to the 80s. I think synth pop is just New Wave without traditional instruments like guitars. But I was going to do a more synth pop oriented song myself aka wasn't planning on adding any guitars. I think just synths will be in my tune. I wanted to give everyone more options here though, so New Wave ( / Synth Pop) it is. And just for good measure, New Wave itself: Ldyx3KHOFXw
Members psi
From wisegeek.com: "New Wave is often thought of as akin to disco in its popularity, and unimportance. However, some important artists came out of this period, particularly U2, Sting, and Elvis Costello." Man that's harsh! Devo? Gary Numan? Oingo Boingo? ...all unimportant wankery I guess ;P

Members deadvolvo1
OK, here's my contribution: Syn Computer - Tell (Instrumental) Just a Pro One, Matrix 6, and Ace Tone FR-3. Played live, multitracked, and I can't play. It's about as true to 1981 as I can do.
Members bloopbleep
Man brought back so many good memories with the entire 80's era. Members bloopbleep
Do tech house remixes count? Probably not, I digged them acid-house back then. They're very new and refreshing flavor, just bad-ass:thu:
Members stikygum
I think I'm going to showcase my MEK for this genre's song. That's the other good thing besides getting tracks done, it allows me to dig around, to learn a few more tricks about my gear and do things a little differently FYI Deadvolvo, I think your link to your song is dead. Members deadvolvo1
FYI Deadvolvo, I think your link to your song is dead. I took it down. I realized no one could possibly enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it. Here's what goes in its place..... Members Khazul
Probably not, I digged them acid-house back then. They're very new and refreshing flavor, just bad-ass:thu: It was more of a tongue in cheek dig as one week was given to the entirity of electronic and pretty much all dance music, where in my world it would be first one week for each sub genre of house, then into various flavours or trance etc and then everything else. Sub-genres of house alone should keep us going for nearly a year

Members stikygum
Well, this was supposed to be the week for Retro music - New Wave and Synth Pop. I guess not too many want to relive the 80s I personally love 80s music and thought this would be a good easy and cheesy week to mess around with. I'm still working on my piece and will probably get my song in at the deadline. BTW, what do you guys think of doing a Drum n Bass or Hip Hop (with synths) week? This is supposed to be a creative challenge and mess up area for people to learn from others music and critique. It's not meant to be a 'blow other people away with your music' challenge. If you guys see any downfall to this 2 week program give me some feedback. I'm guessing either people aren't into New Wave/Synth Pop or just don't have time. Members ElectricPuppy
or just don't have time. ^ This. Hell, I'm still trying to do a House track! Although whether it's really House now or not is debatable at this point... This was the problem with The Monthly Mission, too. People would LIKE to participate, but then realize they don't have enough time to devote towards a piece that they would be comfortable posting publically, so no one posts anything. You should just post it. The main reason I'm doing these is to get help from others. Post it and I'll give you some friendly critique. I posted my house tune the last day or so, but I made it simple and used a drum loop. That's the hardest part imo, is getting the drums. You could always copy a pattern from a House tune. Still, I wouldn't worry about the drums if those don't sound the way you want, as it's still just a part of the overall song. But if you don't post it, you'll never know. Even if I'm not finished with my New Wave track I'm going to post it as is, even if it sounds crappy. Everything posted should sound more like an attempt, but at least some sort of song form, even if it doesn't sound like the genre.
