Softsynth Setup

I'm going to get protools and plan on using softsynths, but I just learned I need an audio interface to connect my computer to my amp for softsynth operation. Which interface do you suggest for someone who will already have a protools interface but also wants to use softsynths and protools simultaneously through the same computer?

I have a controller and a laptop, but I'm not sure which interface to buy for softsynth operation. Edirol was a brand suggested

Yes you do. You need either MAudio or Digidesigns hardware. Protools softsynths use the RTAS format, and TDM for the DSP version (TDM requires Digidesigns expensive DSP cards). Otherwise you may need a VST software adapter from FXPansion to convert VST's to RTAS. Unless you need Protools to maintain compatibility with some sort of studio it's probably not the best choice if your main goal is to run a bunch of softsynths..

I plan on getting the digidesign 002 or 003 rack rack for protools. I should have addressed these subjects separately. Putting my protools setup aside for the moment, what do I need in between my laptop and amplifier to make softsynths work? Some sort of audio interface/converter? Any suggestions on particular models? I've ordered the Mtron software and want to get everything I need.

Nope. The 002 will do this fine.

You can run any audio signal from your computer through the 002 to your monitors. What you CAN'T do is run certain soft synths in ProTools without a wrapper. Protools plugins need to be in RTAS format. If you want to run a VST plug-in in ProTools, for example, you'll need to buy FXpansion's VST-RTAS wrapper.

Very well said.

Protools is a studio standard for recording tracking. Other than midi, it is very good, fairly expensive, and very reliable.

If you are heavy into softsynths, I would never choose Protools.

If you're running a MIDI cable, then the chain would be Controller MIDI out>002 interface MIDI in>laptop AND 002 audio out>amp[/quote

I have arranged this setup, but I am not getting sound to my reference monitors. I'm using M-tron pro software. My 002 rack indicates its receiving a midi signal from my microkorg (my controller). From the rack I'm running a firewire cable to my laptop, then rca cables from the rack to my monitors. Could it be a problem with the firewire cable or is there a synching step for midi I have to do with my software?
