Members ZCat
They are discussing this over at The Gear Page, they think there's a Wurli in CS. I think it's a guitar that sounds like a piano, myself, but what do I know? What do you experts say?
Members b3keys
If you have ever seen them play live, the song is done on guitar.
Members ZCat
I've seen them 5 times, if you can believe that! They are talking about the studio version, they think there's a piano player doubling what the Rev is doing on guitar. I think it's all guitar myself. The half step slurs seem too smooth to be a piano to me. It does sound piano-ey, though.

Members coyote-1
It could be an effect on guitar or bass... when my band played it we used a Wurly sound on piano.
Members tim gueguen
Always thought there was a Wurli on there as well.

Members Jercat
It's a distorted Wurli. It's a well known fact that ZZ Top plays with assisting backing tracks for live shows.

Doesn't sound like there's enough strumming separation in the chord notes to be a guitar.
Members mate_stubb
On the studio cut, there is no question that electric piano is on the track. I have owned and gigged extensively with wurlis and a pianet, and I lean towards it being a pianet. Especially the part where the piano is playing the F to E chords with the flying saucer guitar line behind - that sounds like a chorused pianet to me. Sorry for the double post. It's a Pianet N not a Wurlitzer. Lots of people confuse the two. It was also used on My Best Friend, These Eyes, Momma Told me not to Come, and The Beatles stuff. Itchycoo Park by the Small Faces used a Cembalet but they almost sound the same. JPJ used a Hohner Electra piano which was like a cross between a Rhodes and a Wurlitzer in sound, on Misty Mountain Hop and No Quarter, although he used Fenders live. Members coyote-1
Gosh. Now that you mention it, I can clearly hear the difference in my head between that sound and, say, the Wurly on Dark Side of the Moon. Fortunately, they are close enough in character to be reasonable subs for each other. Unfortunately, I own neither - and don't have room for 'em in any event. lol Sorry for the double post. Members mate_stubb
also, don't confuse the pianet N with the pianet T. I gigged a Combo Pianet - is that more like an N or a T in sound?
Members JoeBuck
I gigged a Combo Pianet - is that more like an N or a T in sound? Combo Pianet is a Pianet N without the vibrato circuit essentially. The Pianet T is garbage. I've had a Cembalet, Pianet N, Combo Pianet and Pianet T. They're all great with the exception of the Pianet T.

That said, I still think that the idea of the Clavinet/Pianet Duo is cool...even though that had a "T" in the back.
