Analog synths

Okay, Im new here, and newly into the world of analog synthing. I'm in the market for one in the $400-$500 range. Would like something vintage like. Mostly just pure analog sounds that I'm after. So far, the ones I like the demos of the most are Roland's Sh 101 and the moog rogue. But they seem to be just out of my price range. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I know pretty much nothing.

Not really much for analog in that price range. SH-101's are going for insane prices these days.

An MFB Synth II might be your best bet. You may get lucky and pick up a juno 60 for that price, or a Sequential multi-trak or Sequential six-trak. A technosaurus Microcon can run around 300-400 if you can find one and is a lot like the 101.

Akai Ax60 is pretty neat but lacks velocity control.

If you save up a bit more money you could get a Spectral Audio Neptune II for 600.

I've seen moog LP's go for 700 recently.

Dont know if you wanted to stick to Monophonics, but for that price, a Korg Polysix, Monopoly or Roland Juno 6 would give you a plethora of pleasing analogue goodness

There's more than likely no way anyone is finding a Polysix or a Mono/Poly for under $800.

Look into the SH-09. Sounds just as good as the 101 (some say better) and they usually sell for right around $400. Or keep searching, you just might find a deal on a 101 under the $500 mark.

Dave Smith's Mopho is a monophonic analog synth for under $400.00. Its a remake of the Pro-1 basically. The circuit board still says Pro-One.

Well, Dave Smith says its one voice of the Prophet 08, which we know is no Prophet 5 ;).

The Mopho sounds nothing like a Pro One, but is analog, has 2 sub oscs and is nice in it's own way.

Killer synth. My friend bought one for $150 in high school. Only one oscillator, but the most smooth, velvety texture ever. Also has sample & hold, full metal case, and I believe audio in. It's like a single voice Jupiter 4 but with 37 keys and the size of a small skateboard. Synths like the SH-09 are the reason I hate new Roland gear. Their old synths sounded so amazing while anything they've released since the D-50 suxx big time. Sorry Roland fans. I don't know what it was about those old Roland analogues (I'm assuming the filter), but they just sound other-worldly.

However, if I was the original poster and had no experience with old analogues, I'd start fresh with a used Little Phatty, if I couldn't find anything old, cheap, and working properly. It shouldn't take that long to save up $800 to buy something that won't need servicing for 20 years. It also won't lose any value. A used SH-09 for $400 is worth zero when it fails. Getting it repaired properly and calibrated will cost the same as just buying a LP.

I've never had my analogues professionally serviced, but I know it's an inevitability. If you haven't been spoiled by a vintage and can start fresh, do so.

It's a lot like old cars. I love my Triumph Spitfires, but I'd never tell anyone to get one. I tell people to buy a used Miata (which I also have). Unless you've been spoiled by the smell of the English upholstry and the burble of the tailpipe, ignorance is bliss.

There was a Mono/Poly for sell for $120CD in the Montreal Craigslist. I called, an old lady answered said it had already sold. Needless to say I was sad.

you can still find MG-1's around $400. if you're looking for a rogue that is your ticket. otherwise a good conditioned juno 60 will run you about the same and although poly with digi oscillators is awesome for learning synthesis... (and stays in tune). :)

I should probably add that I want it to sound really good on recordings, because I'm doing some studio work now that I want to add some beefy analog sounds to. And thanks to everyone who has contributed. Much food for thought.
