Digital Piano Home Monitor Solutions?

Hi all. I currently have a Roland RD-700GX that I use strictly in home to play piano and whatever sounds I have an itch to tinkle on, but most importantly piano. Now, the RD sounds great through my Audio Technica MT20 (i think?) headphones, very rich, deep, solid, etc. But when I hook it up to my monitors, which are M-Audio BX5A's, the sound just loses alot of its, well sound =

I have them set properly, equilateral triangle, ear level, a little less than a meter away for each, so I dont think that is the issue. I can get it to sound a little better if I set the monitors physically onto the top of the RD, seems to really give the illusion of better bass response, probably because I can feel it more through the keys and keyboard themsevles, but still, it doesn't sound anywhere as well, real, lively, rich, etc as it does through my headphones. Plus, I need the space on the keyboard to set my mixer and laptop! Now I know an obivous solution here is to just play with the cans on, but I'd rather not, as for me, that just takes away something from the physical sensation of playing. Perhaps an outboard master EQ over the monitor signals would help...? I think that studio monitors just arent what I need for this application? I dont need something super accurate for mixing, I dont think I need very "Hi-Fi". I need something that just sounds great, clear, brings my sounds to life. I also will use these speakers for playing my turntable through, as well as my computer audio on occasion (mostly just playing music).

I am stumped where I should be looking for this? Do I just need better studio monitors? Would a powered sub be a better solution than a monitor upgrade? Do I need to be looking at some home-theater type speakers instead of reference monitors? Im kinda low budget, maybe $300 max in addition to the monitors, or $300 + whatever I can sell them for if they should be replaced all-together?

Perhaps someone can shed some light, this is my first venture into this level of perfection in my home sound setup, hopefully I can get somewhere close to what I want with the resources available.
