Members akliner
Hai Guyz! I know there's other forumz on here dedicated to this kind of thing, but I like to keep things in the family. Anyway, I think it's time I actually bought a desk strictly for studio use. I need it to the following: -Hold an iMac (forthcoming purchase...my welcome to Chicago, Alex gift to myself) -Hold the S90ES (important...I can put the smaller keys on X stands, but since I mostly track piano, I'd like it to hold prime real estate on the workstation -The only piece of rack gear I have, at present, is my Presonus FireStudio Project...so I don't need loads of rack slots -Hold 2 8" nearfield monitors I'm very open to just going the Ikea route, as I'd like to spend less than $500 on this (and if I can get the chair in there for under $500, that is preferred. By and large, I like the idea of a big flat surface. Any suggestions from those who've set up a project studio with furniture? Thanks!
Members ElectricPuppy
I only have direct experience with one studio desk, and I think I wouldn't buy it again. Otherwise... how about just a big flat desk with some kind of bridge/riser for the back? That's what I'd do next time.
Members flat earth
Is it me, or when you look into studio desks/stands/racks, you never seem to be able to find exactly what you really want? Theres always some ledge or space that dosen't quite fit the piece of gear you want to fit into the b*gger.

Looks like I'll just be on the lookout for a flat surfaced desk.

Members akliner
Hey Akliner, if you don't mind me asking how do you like the Presonus FireStudio Project? I really like it! No complaints. It's never failed. The audio goes into the computer and out of the computer. Plays well with Logic and Garageband...no complaints! Members zoink
Studio RTA Producer workstation. Usually you can find them for $399 on sale twice a year at GC (retail is $499), and even less used on Craigslist (depending on where you live). http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Studio-RTA-Producer-Station?sku=546553 It's a good workstation. It'll handle any 88 key unit, and has ample space for monitors (video and audio) and plenty of rack space. I use it in addition to an Apex Commander, among other things. Members SharkMinusBear
I'm in the same situation, I'm looking for a desk for a small studio and this is the best ive found: it's $500 at musicians friend, which is right around what I'm looking to pay. http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Studio-RTA-Producer-Station?sku=546553 I guess if I went all out I would get the KK Audio A1, but $1300 is a ton of money for a desk when you can get a nice hardwood table for half that:
Members MartinHines
Yeah - totally custom from these guys. http://www.custom-consoles.com/ If you don't mind saying, how much including shipping? Akliner, The OnStage WS7500 might work. It comes in Rosewood/Black or Maple/Gray Steel, and costs $170:http://www.sweetwater.com/c686--Studio_Desks_Workstations You can also get some associated Rack cabinets for it: http://www.onstagestands.com/catalogs/chapters/30_Workstations.pdf
Members Markyboard
If you don't mind saying, how much including shipping? This should give you a rough idea. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/manufacturer/Sound_Construction The Raxxess drawers and sliding shelf (for Speck mixer) were not included I also had them build me a matching table. I want to get an IKEA Galant 64"x32" , add a (musical) keyboard shelf below it, and add two self-made 4-RU wooden racks on the sides - basically obtain all the A1 offers, but at a fraction of the price... $200 for the IKEA desk, prob. around $100 for my self-built add-ons. Members cbentley
Couldn't find what I wanted at a reasonable price and couldn't stand the thought of another particle board desk so I built my own along with another matching rack.
Members akliner
Build it myself, eh? That may be doable...only I'd contract out the construction That's one benefit of working in theatre...you know lots of people who can construct, sew, paint, etc. Thanks for all the help everyone! Members stephen.hazel
At least design it yourself Maybe leave the EXACT measurements to the guy you have build it that knows about wood thicknesses, etc, etc. I like the idea of just 2 slats under the keybed supporting it. That way there's plenty of KNEE room. Most keyboards have plenty of rigidity to be "racked" like that. Also, a sliding wiiiide music stand is good. And a COMFORTABLE pc keyboard pull out tray somehow. I still haven't figured out a good way to do that :/ Good luck!
Members donaldcrunk
yeah i was going to say, if i have the time i can build you one for like half of those custom dudes 5k is really too much for anything like that, unless its made out of gold and boobs
Members Echopark
It took me a long time to decide on my current work surface. At one time i thought of hiring someone to build a custom desk. The table im using was purchased at World Market. Its the "Napa" dining table. 6 feet wide and over 3 feet deep. Pleanty of surface. I had two 3-space racks built by Niceracks and matched the stain. Built the computer monitor riser myself. I believe its worked out well and it looks good too.:blah:
Members Gribs
You can go Quik-lok modular if you don't want wood. This is basically what I have, though I have moved some stuff around and have a second Z716 stand now with a second tier added on. I don't have a table saw and I don't have a lot of room in my basement for a workshop. Quiklog Z716 ($99) Quiklog Z720 Accessory bar ($29) Quikloc Z714 Monitor shelf ($66) Quicklok Z712 keyboard tray ($65) Quikloc Z731 utility shelf (2 x $56 = $112) Quikloc ZM91 6 space rack ($26) Quikloc ZM99 caster kit ($9) Total ~ $406 (plus shipping would probably run about $50 since it is heavy steel stuff).
