Latency problem in Sonar

Is you is using ASIO or is you is using WDM for your audio-style interfacery? I never had much luck with WDM, I use the ASIO. I think I'm using 128 byte buffers, but I don't recall.

What is your audio interface again?

Woah, the Pupster saves the day! I would kiss you, except for that whole "Love Shack" stigma you've been saddled with.

Yes I was using WDM. Switched to ASIO. When I now play, the note sounds before I hit the keys.

Here's my ASIO settings in Sonar 6 - don't know if they are much help versus Sonar 8.5.... Depends on whether your interface uses ASIO I think...

Good to see you, Gerry.:thu:

I got it know, it's going to be fun using this.

So what's the softie in question Cyg? Some new orchestral monster? Post tracks please.
:D

Oh, and I think there's been like 2 updates to 8.5 by now, if you haven't done those already.

Did the updates.

I'm playing with this "TruePianos" right now. I don't know if I like it. It's got a nice articulation but the sustain sounds rather crappy. It's a bright bugger, that's for sure. My other one is Garritan which is rather dull.

I only got a dual-core. Still, compared to my old one, this thing is like a NASA super-computer. :thu: Dirt cheap too, all I did was buy a firewire card and now I'm in the cool kids club again.

I messed around with TruePiano when I got 8.0, and I decided I didn't like it. There was still something off about them and I thought my ol' Motif piano sounded better.

Have you flipped through the presets in Dimension Pro yet? It's a pretty darn useable rompler, I think. Paolo posted some good demos from it earlier.

Finally: Do you use a control surface? I'm still mousing around and I don't like it. ON the other hand, I have the ReMOTE SL and it's fancy-shmancy Automapping stuff, but I feel overwhelmed with options so I don't use it.

I've been using the dynamic button on the edirol pcr 800, it works really well with the new 8.5 version. I've had a demo with the new Cakewalk controllers with the ACT automapping and it's a bit more seamless when your switching between VST's, it didn't need any setting up I just switched on the ACT mode and everything was assigned.

Dangit! You're the reason I didn't feel all skidrow about
still
using Sonar 3.

Iz a orfling.

Everything has been a pain in the ass so far, you might be better off.

OK, now my keyboard isnt working. Since the good folks at M-Audio dont have a driver for my midi-sport, I cant use that. I've been using the USB from my Yamaha, which requires a driver. The driver is a "WDM" driver. Say What?? So, if I just changed Sonar over to ASIO, does these mean I am screwed? I'm frightened, hold me.

Yeah, you've got to use ASIO... much better.... :D

I am currently in the midst of a "DAW Infidelity" phase

I started many moons on Cubase, then switched to Sonar (back then it was called Cakewalk Pro Audio 6) in 1996 or 97 and kept using til now, but recently have gotten:

- Pro Tools MPowered

- Logic Studio 9

I have to say these two programs are quite different from Sonar and I'm learning them, and they both sound really good (Pro Tools' latest version even kinds looks like Logic)

Not to say that Sonar (and its on-board synths) doesn't, but the "workflow" is I think better - but I'm still learning them.

The "TruePiano" is ok but frankly I wasn't blown away... but I think if you spend more money for their Emerald or something version , it could be better

In contrast, I am in love with the Pro Tools "MiniGrand" plugin, it sounds great and responds beautifully to touch - Check out these three attachments:

(sorry, I didn't trim the waveforms - skip ahead if there's a bit of blank space at the beginning of the files)

1. the Pro Tools Mini Grand plugin piano

1. the Pro Tools on-board Hammond plugin:

2. the Pro Tools vox pad sound from the on-board ROMplaling plugin:

I fixed it. Reinstalled the driver.

So am I. I'm having an affair with Sandra Bullock.:lol:

Sonar 8 is certainly an ugly mother. Cluttered as can be. The softies are excellent for the most part. The TruePianos is growing on me a bit.:thu:

1. The piano sounds pretty good. A little too wide but that's probably adjustable.

1. The Hammond sounds weird with phones. Very clicky.

2. Beautiful pad.

Paolo, did you make a midi file for the piano one? I'd like to compare it to TruePianos for kicks.

Yes, it is adjustable. I just used a generic setting. There are a several parameters to adjust

It's the patch... way too much key-click, you're right.... I was going very fast and selected a preset "Jazz" patch - they programmed too much click in it--Of course that's adjustable too

2. Beautiful pad.

Dimension Pro is also extremely good - but this puppy called "Xpand!2" is quite great... the only thing is, it's not very programmable - you can just basically layer up to four sounds and tweak them a bit - but the waveROM is good and the effects also.

I had not saved it (what, I am like Paganini, I don't repeat! :D )

BUT Pro Tools has a wonderful feature that automatically BACKS UP your sessions as you go and saves them in a folder... so I opened that folder and TA-DAH... the original recording of the piano was there...

So the MIDI file is here attached in the zip file.... have fun comparing it with TruePianos.... My bet is on the Mini Grand though! :D Just kidding, TruePianos is good too.

Here it is
click

Hmmm, not sure which I like better.

Thank you, David

You could have fixed all my playing errors in the MIDI file instead of embarassing meI!! :cop::D LOL Hey, it was a one-pass recording.

Anyway, my impressions at first :

Mini Grand: American sound, precise but cold, mega-bucks 1980s Steinway recorded in a classy venue with mega-bucks microphones and amps :D

TruePianos: European sound, warm but messy, 1930s baby-grand recorded in a basement studio with funky old mics and amps :D

Seriously, though - I'm not a piano connoisseur ... I'm a SYNTHE guy and I know Hammond a bit.
