I'm not sure what's the best path to take.

I'm in need of producing various sounds during live performance. My main instrument is bass but occasionally need to produce sounds such as hand clapping, bouncing spring (boing), bubbles, and other similar sounds (I play childrens music and it's mainly for interactive stuff).

Would a sampler such as the Roland SP404 be my best bet...OR, a midi-controller (M-Audio, Akai, etc.) with a laptop and downloads get me there?

I already have a very competent laptop. Budget hopefully not more than $800-$1,000.

I would say the SP would be the simplest, most trust-worthy route. Much less likely to crap out on you mid-show than a laptop. Some people around here will probably tell you the same: computers are far superior in everything to hardware, excepting reliability.

I rely a 100% in computers for live shows, so to me it is not a point.

However, if you only need the same arrangement of FX / Sounds show after show, using a single piece of hardware will be easier to setup and play than having to use Laptop + Audio Interface + MIDI controller.

That said, yes, the SP404 may be a much better choice in this situation. Hey, it even runs on batteries!

SP-404 was made for your application ... However, if you don't have the greatest memory, you might want to keep the number of samples down 'cause there's no display for file names ... That's the reason I got rid of mine ... Otherwise it was terrific ... I'll get another one when Roland introduces a character-based display instead of the three-digit one in use now ...

Good point!

But I guess with some small stickers he could easily label it.

:idk:

why not just bring (and do) the real thing on stage?

many of the sound effects occur during songs and I'm playing bass at the same time. I currently use an Alesis AirSynth (similar to a theramin type instrument) and would like to incorporate other sound effects and patches I can't do with the AirSynth.

I am leaning towards the SP-404SX but what about considering a Midi foot- controller to trigger the SP404 or sound effects via laptop. Either the Behringer FCB1010 , Roland FC-300, etc...

In playing bass at the same time it may make things easier.

oh decisions...

My Alesis AirSynth only has numbered presets. I use a set list with corresponding numbers for presets so I know where I'm at during the set.

easy.

A lot of people use that Behringer foot controller - so it should be relatively easy to get help using it, should you need the help (large user base). If you want to just use your laptop as the sample player host, there are a bunch of free sample players available - try searching here: http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php

You might even be able to get away with plugging the headphone output of the laptop into whatever amplification you're using, since you'll just be playing sound effect samples and won't need high end audio quality/performance.
