Keyboard PA help! Decisions

Hey guy's

I recently bought the Kurweil SP4-7.

I'm not a massive keyboard player, I'm a singer-song writer implementing a few Piano songs in my set.

I'm not very experienced when it comes to Keyboard / PA set ups.

I just bought a FBT Jolly 12RA Active Powered Speaker 150W + 50W. Got a great deal on the SP4 as I bundled it in.

I bought it on impulse with out realising it didn't have any EQ adjustability from behind. Just a volume & ground lift switch.

The guy in store recommended that these would be great for my application & the money.

The FBT PA does have a nice tone to it. I'm still trying it out and getting used to it. It would have been nice if it had the Adjustable EQ from behind for portability purposes.

Has anybody had previous experience with the FBT PA, I'm thinking wether to get a small DI mixer?

The store had a couple of other options for powered Mackie, Samson, L-Pro Xion not sure what else.

As you can see here I'm working on a smallish budget, $450-$750AUD.

Thanks.

Hey guy's

I recently bought the Kurweil SP4-7. Question is what Keyboard PA?

I'm not a massive keyboard player, I'm a singer-song writer implementing a few Piano songs in my set.

Now I bought the keyboard bundeled in originally with with a cheap L-Pro Xion 10P Active Loudspeaker 150W RMS. Got a great deal. At least $300 off the keyboard retail.

It was ok, but I was experiecing alot of noise because it didn't have a ground lift.

I went back then decided to go for a more expensive PA with the ground hum switch at the back. FBT Jolly 12RA Active Powered Speaker 150W + 50W. Was about $300 AUD more.

I bought it on impulse with out realising it didn't have any EQ adjustability from behind. Just a volume & ground hum switch.

The FBT PA does have a better tone & is apparently a better speaker. How ever I'm thinking wether it is worth it as it doesnt have the EQ functionality from behind.

I'm still trying to get used to the FBT sound.

Has anybody had previous experience with the FBT PA, I'm thinking wether to get a small DI mixer with some EQ on it or just go back to the cheaper monitor.

As you can see here I'm working on a smallish budget. I know from my memory the store has a few Samson PA's & Mackies.

Not sure what to do.

Ideas anyone.

I must be missing something here... Why would anyone want EQ from behind a speaker? Seems like 100% useless.

Go with the best cab and get a mixer for the EQ. (Or just do it with the SP4)

Also I am pretty sure that you are not going to get any responses till you specify a price range you are looking at and what type of speakers you want (active, passive?).

Anyway, as always I can only recommend not getting a roland KC-550 unless you buy it from me, in which case it is the best amp ever made.

I understand where your coming from, onboard EQ can seem pointless.

I thought having some basic EQ functionality onboard would save me lugging around a mixer for small gigs.

I've never had a PA / Keyboard set up before & as I stated I won't be doing a huge amount of it. 4-5 songs max in set will be Piano based.

Does the SP4 have EQ functionality? I had no idea.

Obviously sound is different for all individuals, still getting used to my FBT 12ra.

Anybody had experience with those

Why can't you just plug the keyboard into the main/vocal PA and be done with it? Or aren't you using one of those?

Regarding EQ, Kurzweil's site says the keyboard has "Dozens of complex effect chains taken from the PC3, with everything from concert hall reverbs to amplifier simulations and rotary effects." Is there, perhaps, an EQ parameter inside the Kurz for each patch?

Hey mate

Yeah plugging it in to the Main/Vocal PA is the simplest option. In many cases it will most often be the way.

I just thought purchasing a half decent PA could come in handy for some Gig's in the future, as well as home use & rehersal.

Haven't fiddled around with the SP4 much, guess it's in there some where

I am pretty sure the SP4 has 5 band half parametric mastering EQ (Low and high graphic bands rest parametric). As well as 3 band graphic compressor. That is if it's anything like the PC3. Also you may be able to edit some programs but I am not sure about that at all. Perhaps you should read the manual?

But yeah it is pretty pointless to get your speakers because of an EQ knob. And if you get passive you need a mixer anyway. If anything the lack of the EQ is a sign that it's not a toy speaker.
