Do You Guys Ever Dream ABout Gear?

Last night I had such a realistic dream, I was in the music store noodling around on the various keyboards and I saw a Korg Micro-Oasys, it was on sale for $1399.

It had 61 little baby micro keys. I am losing it.

One time I dreamt I was down on Canal Street in NYC for a job interview. All the stores were selling keyboards, some with the PCB exposed and they had the option of coming with a daughterboard that made TB-303 noises. It turned into a scary dream where I almost got raped by my prospective boss but I knew kung fu and fought him off.

Another dream I was in a record shop in NYC (a totally made up one) and they basically had one wall of obscure 12" singles, a lot of white labels. But then the rest of the store was taken up by a range of all-in one dub reggae soundsystems - mixer, speakers, effects, dub sirens - from like boombox size to huge consoles. Then the shop opened up into some kind of punk rock museum that led to secret corners of the East Village and then a club that everyone had to go to..

Another one I was a singer (which I'm not, can't carry a tune) and we were playing the Fillmore and our band was making the most wonderful lush Echo and the Bunnymen type sounds but just beyond them - just the most massive sound with keys, guitars, drums... I woke up and tried to play the music but it was beyond me. I have gotten riffs out of songs heard in dreams - one punk, one house and that was pretty cool... try to grab a keyboard near my bed and get them down before I forget.

Lol, 61 key microkorg. Not a bad idea actually. Yes I occassionally have dreams where I'm playing instruments, keybaord or otherwise. They are not allways human made keybaords etc though. Some have been designed more for use with paws rather then fingers. Lol.

I dream about hanging out with, filling in with, and playing gigs with Duran Duran. Sometimes I only hang with one of the guys back stage or in the hotel. I always have some of my buds with me and the Duran guy at the time usually treats me like dirt or a joke, as though he knows me to well. Some times they just act put out or try and to away. Every now and again that will seem interested in what I am doing musically and writing wise. Or they will give me advise. I always have the gear I need at the time

I once had a dream I was running through a giant vegetable garden being chased by man-size vegetables.

I was running as fast as I could and behind me there were giant carrots, green peppers and tomatoes chasing after me, they looked very angry.

I woke up in a cold sweat.

Suppose you were one of those little people, I don't know what the politcially correct term is these days, midgets, dwarfs, little people?

Suppose you had mad keyboard skills and were on the road playing in a recording act, how cool would it be to have custom made little A-frame keyboard stands filled with all the "micro' line of available keyboards, lol

I'd also have a little junior size cape

I think it's pretty rare to actually dream about gear but that happened couple times for me:

I was in some flea market that sold antiques and other stuff, and then I saw some analog drum machine which was sort of big wooden block, like the roland's CR-78 but with simple dark brown colored buttons... I bought it immediately because it was real bargain (can't remember price, or if there were any....) but when I checked it at my home I realized that what I thought to be analog drum machine was actually some antique tabletop clock!:lol:

LOL, now I remember. When I saw the drum machine in the flea market, I did notice the internal machinery that was same as this:

[video=youtube;55DnnMWm5Tg]

but then at my home I checked it and it wasn't anything more than the machinery of a clock!

Second dream was about another flea market but this time I saw real EMS VCS3 for bargain! Can't remember the price but it was less than one hundred euros. I immediately toke it and was running into a checkout. BUT! When I got it into checkout, the lady working there KNEW what it was and demanded that may not take it away unless I would pay the "normal" price of 10,000 euros!

What a nightmare!

I no longer dream about gear because my brain has caught up to current economic realities with regard to useful musical gear and its availability and price on Planet Earth in 2011.

In the deepest recesses of my mind, I do not live the nightly realities of Ray Manzarek playing with his band at The London Fog in late 1966, after the gig bitching to record company execs who might want to sign the band: "How about some better gear?" We all know (in historical retrospect) that Ray wanted a Hammond B3, couldn't afford one, and settled for a Vox Continental. His talent alone allowed him squeeze some memorable sounds out of a cheezy piece of crap.

Musicians in the current age do not have these issues.

Whether they are about to be signed or not.

If they do, it's all in their heads.

Seems weird to me, putting yourself through hellish thoughts of WANT and DESIRE that you are no longer socially or economically bound by.

We are creatures of habit, though. Our minds are still wired into the idea that great gear is hard to come by and only comes at great expense to us. Much like humans are still wired to live in an Agricultural Age while being dragged kicking and screaming into the Industrial Age and even past it.

We still have the longing need to feel that Artistic Zeitgeist is just one piece of equipment away.

Gotta be some creative stuff going on in your studio if you consider vegetables gear :D

It's uncommon but at times I've dreamed that I had Minimoogs and ARP 2600s and then woke up, believing it for a minute or so just to become devastated of the harsh reality. Sometimes when I haven't used my older gear for a couple of months I dream that they're sad and lonely, kinda like the toys in Toy Story lol :(

I've got dozens and dozens of re-occuring dreams, at least the settings re-occur...

In the one synth dream I have, I've somehow obtained about 5-6 pieces of uber-sophisticated synth gear, and they're all on display on desks and shelves in what looks like a retail sales room. Most of them look like greatly oversized PCs from the late 80s, with all sorts of slots and odd boxes stuck on here and there..hardly any have keyboards.

The biggest piece of gear was used to make some famous and spectacular Disney animated movie, as if Fantasia was updated to all synth-created sounds - the movie is always running on a big screen over this piece of gear, and I'm dying to figure out how it was done.

But mainly I'm wandering around, trying to figure out which one to try out, and I'm slightly troubled that, incredible as all this stuff is, it's all getting a bit out of date and I wish I'd gotten hold of them a few years back.

Interesting to read this thread today. Just last night I had a dream that I was in a music store looking to buy a grand piano. It's strange because even though I'm very into synths and sound design, I don't play piano or even consider myself a "keyboardist". However, as a producer, for the last week I've been scouting studios in the Bay area for one with a grand piano for a client who is coming in from out of town to record. So it's not totally surprising that a grand piano entered my dreams. However, a surreal element was that the salesperson in the dream was someone I know in real life who plays the cello and is fairly conservative, but in the dream he was wearing this totally flashy suit like a pimp would wear - strange!

I had a dream last night about gear, strange that you should ask.

I dreamed that I was organizing my staff (who have nothing to do with music) into an electronic outfit to accompany me and someone came up with a really nice but basic sync patch that I was trying to add some filtering to when the dream changed.
